My friend has a 2001 Grand Am and went through a car wash that tore her whole mirror off...it was just hanging by the wire (which we cut). Just wondering how easy it would be to replace it ourselves and if we need to take the entire interior door panel off (crossing my fingers we don't). If any one has instructions they would be much appreciated!!

P.S. thanks to this website we were able to figure out how to replace her head light bulbs with ease! The pictures were awesome and instructions superb. Thanks so much for helping a couple of mechanically challenged girls out!!!

Welcome to AF.

You can do this DIY.
Just pop off the triangle part, with the speaker in it(if your model has one),
right behind the mirror on the interior.

THiers three studs that went into the mirror,
you'll need to remove the nuts on those.
To reach the plug in might be tricky,
but it can be done without removing the door panel.

The stealership is pricey on those mirrors,
check EBay or your local body shop.
They are much cheaper!

I'll look and see if I have any pics that might help.

Thanks so much! I was planning on getting the mirror on ebay 'cause you don't even wanna get me started on the dealerships. If you have any pictures that would be great but if not no biggie! Thanks for your instructions. Should be pretty simple ::knock on wood::!

there a wrecking yard down here that deals with late model Gand Am so used parts are easy to find. Look around, with thousands of these cars on the road there is bound to a wrecking yard near you that has the parts.

Same exact thing just happened to me about a month ago... except it took BOTH mirrors! They are extremely easy to fix and getting one off E-Bay is your best bet.. They go for about $75-85 through a dealership and about $15 off E-bay..... You just take off the speaker on the inside of the door (it just pops off) unscrew the bolts, put the new mirror on, then screw them back in.. replace with speaker cover and your done! Good luck

An even easier fix, jerry riggin style,
is to drill out the old bolt holes. Install some 1-1.5" dome head bolts and new nuts. :grinyes:

You can almost hang from those babies

At least the car wash wont take them out,
I hate that :disappoin

You guys are the best!! I took the speaker off this weekend to look at it and my friend freaked out because she doesn't want the speaker broken, but I saw the bolts you were talking about and it looks easy. Just a matter of finding the spot where the wires attach and getting the mirror! thanks for your advice!! :)

that plug is tricky.
You'll need a flashlight and a longer screwdriver.

Its about 1-2" below the door panel.
Use the screw driver to release the catch on the plug-in while gently pulling the plug out.

Goes back in much easier.
