Rattle upon acceleration.

When I accelerate, mostof the times I hear this rattle which sounds like its coming from underneath the truck. I remember someone else talking about it on this forum but can't remember what his problem/solution was. I looked underneath and grabbed everything with my hands and shook it to see if it's loose but can't find anything. Anyone ever had a problem like that ?

My truck also has some weird rattle in it upon accaeleration. not a lifter tick either. not a real heavy sounding rattle and not real light either .....lol. Kinda makes you go hmmmm...wtf. I have heard that it could be baffles in cat or muffler ,you may want to look into that. My neighbour /uh hum GM mechanic says to crush them abit to tighten things up. let us know how you make out.

I dont mean to change the subject, but since we are talkin about vibrations. Anyone hear a vibration around 900 to 1300 rpm in the steering column or dash area, i already know its not the intermediate steering shaft, Thanks

the vibration upon acceleration could be your u-joints but more information is needed like your RPM range when the vibration occurs, tire size, does it occur just when acclerating or when braking also

as for the vibration near the steering column around 900-1300 RPMs it may just be dash board related and you would ahve to do a little search and destroy but I would also check your pulleys for build up in them cause that could cause your belt to drag the pulley

just my :2cents: im still just a GM trainee and im just going off of what we discussed in class on thursday cause we just covered customer complaints of vibrations

My truck also has the rattle upon acceleration. I hear it worst going over bumps or accerating from idle with the windows down. I had it checked while it was at the dealer for some work and they claimed that the glass beads in the cats can come loose and they wanted to replace the cats on my dime.....Needless to say I decided to live with it for a while.

I'm pretty sure that's the problem with mine, it definitely sounds like its coming from the exhaust system. Is it possible to just get rid of the catalytic converter all together ? The County I live in doesn't require Emissions testing.

CHeck the heat shield for the muffler.

If it came out with a cat it is illegal to remove it.
State inspections require a cat and if operated on a federal highway a cat is required.
Do not use the bare hand to grab EXHAUST STSTEM PARTS when hot or warm.
If exhaust system has a rattle take a rubber hammer and tap on it.
May be a heat shield or clamp or hanger.
If inside cat replace the cat.
A stopped up or bat cat can be harmful to engine and performance.

Mine is an 04 rclb and for the first 5 months had a strange buzz/rattle, but only at a certain rpm range, and typically under a slight load like a small incline. After several trips to the dealer, they still could not find it (couldn't even get it to replicate the first trip or two). Eventually, they called me and said there was a bulletin released and they knew what the problem was. Took it in and about an hour later got it back. Never heard it again. Was told that part of the exhaust system was too close to the frame and rubbed/rattled. They cut and put in a flex pipe to fix it, at least that's what I was told. Good luck.

One more thing. They said they didn't do a recall because it would only appear on a small number of vehicles, so unless you mentioned it they won't tell you.

Tell you one thing for sure, I had lots of complaints about my dealer's sales staff, but the repair techs and supervisors were truely top notch to contact me after a few months to say they knew the cause. I asked how they caught it and they said they had a dedicated person who screened all new service bulletins against unresolved complaints. That is the way to do the job right.

On my '99 the rattle was the throw out pin on the starter. The spring that retracts the pin broke and when I hit the gas I would hear the rattle. The pin would come out and bounce off of the flywheel.

Does the starter face the rear of the truck? Mine has been doing this for a few years, but only does it on acceleration or when the nose of the truck is higher than the rear. This would make sense since it is an intermittent, non-rythmic noise. I've always described this noise as if a bolt was being thrown by the flywheel.

Well, had to change the oil yesterday and while laying under the truck i just banged the mufflers with my fist and it sounds like something is loose in there. So, I banged the one on the other side and that also sounds like something is loose inside, is this normal ? It's both mufflers on each side of the transmission. I went up Pikes Peak two days ago and when coming down 19 miles in 1st gear it rattled like a bag of marbles. And then eve, rytime when accelerating on the highway, the same thing although today after the oil change it seems to be a lot less.

your cat is coved for 8 years or 80k miles. and if you check your book. gm hates me. your wornty is extended for the time its in the shop. I had my wornty extended for 3 months. :) I would call gm and have them extend it, every time it was in the shop. 2 weeks just because a mech used the wrong stuff on the rubber seals around the doors. it pulled the paint right off, and the door seal area needed to be repainted.

took the truck to the shop, for them to check the tires shedding tread. thay had it for 4 days be for telling me thay don't do that type of work and had no ideal what was up. two blow outs later and a new set of tires on my dime. gm is thinking a bout what to do. the tire shop the dealer sent me to so thay could look at the tires lost a new customer. if thay would of took care of the problem in stead of brushing me off. I would of been buying semi tires there.

http://tinypic.com/ei2g51 my unit has the same rattle in the cats as well,so I suspect that is the problem. My neighbour the "uh hum " Gm technician says they on ocassion will beat up on the cats to crush them and tighten the baffles inside . I haven`t done mine ,I just quit worrying about it.

8 years or 80.000 miles, that figures...mine is at 7 years and 146.000 miles....

I have a similar rattle...intermittently, not all the time, it sounds like I'm dragging soup cans under the truck (I'm not doing that...). From the comments here I have a few things to look at. The cats are <10k miles (aftermarket, hi-flow), so I'm hopiing it's not them. The starter spring...could be. Could also be the muffler. I just need to get some time to check it out closer.

I am in the process of having the cat/muffler replaced on my 2000 Chevy 2500, 48,000 actual miles. This is the 3rd time the dealer will have replaced this part since I bought the truck in Nov. 1999: replaced in 2003, 2005 and now in 2007. At this rate, it's going to start getting really expensive after the warranty period. He has no idea why the cat keeps breaking apart; the truck has no other problems. He has suggested that I lodge a complaint with GM. There has to be some reason why their cat converters keep breaking apart. Anyone else have this constant cat problem? UncleBear
