The engine is 2.2 l and it has 198,000 km on it. I've had some work done on it but still no better. Any ideas on what could be the problem would be great. Thanks for the help.

I had an ailing crank sensor cause a "no start when hot" I wonder if your problem may be a coil or some other ignition component becoming heat sensitive....

It might be your ignition switch. Not the ignition cylinder switch on your dash but the one under the hood. It runs about $60 - $80. I am not sure where it is located since the dealer put mine in for me, I do own the old one and the fingers are burnt and corroded real bad. My car would start when its cold outside but would take an hour of cranking to get it going in the heat. Hope this helps you out some.
The car I had this replaced on was a 2002 Grand am with the 2.2 ecotec.

Welcome to AF nightwolf86.
I believe you are talking about the ingintion coils,
they can act up when temps change and they are going bad.
Since its the 2.2 w/198k miles it could be several things in the ignition system causing this.
Gonna take some testing to track this down.
Good Luck acassell60

I love my grand am but Ive put alot of repair money into it lol.
I have to go get a recond head to put on, jumped time bad enough that it bent valves. The GM mechanics wanted $480 to take the motor apart to examine it. Head cost me $150, so knowing even a little bit about cars definetly saves money. If they wanted $480 for taking it apart, it probably wouldve been another 480 to put it back together plus parts and machining the head.
This car has a great powerful engine but man they can be a pain in the rear sometimes.

I had what sounds like the same problem. Fuel pump is loosing pressure. I would be driving and the car would just stall for no apparent reason. Had the fuel pump changed and no problems since.

Used started fluid and it started fine. Now it will not start even with starter fluid. ANY SUGESTIONS PLEASE!!!!.

check for spark, check for fuel. need to do a little work first to narrow the options down below the 500 possibilities that currently exist....

Here is what has been wrong so far:banghead: . The ignition control module was shorted, the battery negitive post was bad and the fuse junction box under the hood is either bad or corroded. The center section of the box will only give 6 volts once in a while and 12 volts once in a while :banghead: . Looked at it last night but didn't really get to much into it last night but will work on it tomorrow. Thank you for the response everyone.
