Thinking of a 240 wagon for my kid.
Any features, model year or problems to look out for or avoid?
Any other vehicle suggestions.
Also thinking jeep cherokee or VW squareback

Statistically, the Volvo 240 was the safest car in history. For the first 17 years of production, more than 2 million cars, there was not one reported fatality. It was the most extensively crash tested car in history. They routinely go 300,000 miles. I have one with 220,000 miles. Everything still works on my car, and there is little appreciable wear.
A Jeep has the poorest repair record of any car. A Volkswagon squareback is a deathtrap. My stepdaughter is 15 now, and I'm trying to save my Volvo for her.

Don't know what yr group you're looking at for the Volvo, but is you got to run to the dealer everytime something goes wrong, forget. If you or your son is mechicanical, highly recommend. Go over to brickboard.com. All the volvo experts there. I'm driving an 85 740(original owner). Do all the work myself.

240s are fairly easy to work on - along with durability its one of their features. Be sure to check in and poke around at: www.swedishbricks.com - it being a great info resource for keeping a 240 going & going & going....
