Have an 01 Jimmy SLT 4x4. Just noticed the growl the other day and it's getting worse. The ABS light just came on this a.m. on the way to work. How do I find what bearing/hub assy. is shot? The growl does not change while turning or doing a lane change....any other bearing I've had go would change while turning. Sounds like the front passenger but want to be sure. Want to change it out myself this weekend and found some other info. here on how to do it.

What is the mileage?
Most wheel bearings do change noise when turning the wheel a little.
But they are a double roller bearing and if both sides of bearing is bad turning the wheel may not change noise.
A ABS scanner code check will point you to the abs problem.
On the bearing raise it up and block it up good and start engine and run at a low speed and see if you can hear which wheel the noise is coming from.
A Dr. type stethoscope or a big long pipe or a bar may aid in hearing the problem side and also sometimes you can feel it.
Also shake wheel for any free play.

Is it possible the sound could be coming from the metal tabs that indicate you need new pads on your disk brakes?

If you are talking about the front Hub assembly, the only way I have found is by feel. Jack it up and take the wheels off. Back off the brakes enough that the pads don't drag or better yet, remove the caliper from the disc. Turn the hub by hand, you should be able to feel which one is getting bad. It won't be much but it should be there.

If you have a capable scanner, scan for codes and you'll find which hub is triggering the ABS code- thats your hub.

It turned out to be the front right hub assy. Didn't have to pay, just bought it w/ a 4 month warranty on the powertrain....wheww. But now they say my idler arm is bad(steering) What symptoms does a bad idler arm give you?

If the idler arm flops up and down it is time to replace it.

It's getting replaced and an alignment. Just was curious what the vehicle will do when one is going bad so I know in the future.
