suburban front axle mystery?

have a 1990 4wd straight axle and had a clunking noise comng fron the front axle disconnected front drive shaft and now both hubs make intermittent clicking noises at various times and speeds its like the hubs are trying to engage? help!!! sometimes they click and if you stop or backup it stops the clicking for a while and then one hub wll start again sometimes loud also? please help thanks

Welcome to AF. Manual or auto hubs? What model 1500/3500? Try and get used to provided pertinent info.

Sounds like worn auto locking hubs. Check the outer axle joints also.
