87 CRX repair Question

im looking into buying a 87 crx si (197K miles on it, runs) off my buddy for $200 and there are 2 main problems with the car.

1. the front strut is broken and needs replaced
2. he says the manual transmission is difficult to shift

my question is are these repairs going to be expensive? is this a car i should even consider buying? any help/feedback would be appreciated.

If your not willing to make these repairs yourself once you purchase the car..i wouldnt bother..these problems could take 30mins to fix or 4 hrs.. now me myself..i would buy it..the main concern would be the tranny which could have a bent shift linkage or low fluids..or it could be shot. as for the strut..id end up getting new aftermarkets neways

I would personally try to stray away from 1g crx's, get yourself a 2g. What is the asking price? The tranny could be shot, which is a timely repair; but the strut you could change in like 20 mins.
Also, keep iin mind that swapping and suspension work is not as easy in a 1g crx as it is in a 2g. 1g crxs have rear beam axles and torsion bars in back, and a cramped engine bay.

why stray away from a 1g? they are rare and i think they look kinda cool..its a si too which is a plus. every reason u mentioned to stray him away is just a walk in the park if he is mechanically inclined. if he's not gonna do the work himself or have a friend help i dont recommend buying the car cause it would cost a arm n uh leg at a mechanic. but we have several of these 1g's in the surrounding junkyards..i dont know what parts are available to u in ur area..but $200 isnt bad..whats the overall condition? interior? rust?

Its not that they're bad or anything its just difficult to swap in anything due to space, mounting, and wiring issues. I've seen a ton of B and D swaps in 1g's, its just a lot more work. I hope the car really is an si because if it were carbed than you would need to convert the whole fuel system.
Another big thing is that 1g's don't have that great of resale value. People aren't prepared to pay as much for one than a 2g crx.

you also forgot about the torsion bars up front, and its only a Shock up there, no strut. They aren't bad cars, but I have to agree with Full Blown and say if your mechanically inclined, get it, if not, pass it. Its one of those cars you have to make alot of stuff for in order for somethings to work. Check out www.Redpepperracing.com I believe, its a 1g/3g only site with alot of good info on it.

no offense to the guy who started this thread..but by reading the thread and seeing the questions asked..i dont think he's too worried about swapping any motors. and he prolly isnt worried about resale value..the question here is..is this 87 crx si worth $200 with 197k with a "broken" strut and a hard shifting tranny..my answer is yes..i dont really know a whole about these cars but im sure its possible to get your hands on a decent tranny..and of course the strut isnt even a issue. but like i posted whats the condition of the body..is it inspected.. is it driveable?

Honestly, for $200 my answer would be yes too. But when did this guy ever say the price is $200? Its something hypothetical that you made up. I doubt thats what the asking price is; lets see if this guy gets back with more details. For all I know, the seller could be asking 2000.
