93 Tercel CV Shaft removal Driver side

This thing just totally locked up. I guess its the neglected cv shafts. It was doing pretty good just the normal popping on turning but it just starting grinding and the left front wheel/frontend just locked up . Think some trash got slung up in the joint and started all this? It drove for a block or 3 going very slowly and by turning side to side but eventually wouldnt go fwd or back. I parked it and came back with trailor and it drove up with no problem. Hope its not a bearing the auto trans.
Well I thought this would be simple to replace the shaft for the drivers side. Hopefully may can just replace the boot on the rt side. Ive got most of the shaft out but the last piece of the shaft is still in the trans/diff. I ended up tearing the inner boot and pulling out the shaft out to get more room to pry on it but no luck yet. Its just not much there to pry on unless you stick the big screwdriver way in there and pry against the bolted in "ring" in the trans. Does this ring come out or stay in? How does the rest of the shaft come out ? Where do you pry and how hard? Thanks for any help.

I just removed the shaft the other night. I wedged a screwdriver on the left side and put pressure on it. I then used a flat pry bar, about a 12" length, on the right side up on the high side of the shaft. One quick pop and the shaft came out. Now I have the new shaft to put in and need to buy a larger channellock plier to put around the base and tap with a hammer until the compression ring compresses enough to go into the trans. Try not to damage any rubber seals or you could get leaks.

Just a side note. After buying the shaft, I also called one of the top muffler repair shops and asked if they would install it. They refused because if the shaft I bought failed, they're would be a question of liability, regardless if I signed something to negate any warranty. Here's what I think. Its a $55 part, a 15 minute job since they have the right tools, and they wanted $225 to do the job. You do the math to see how much per hour they can make on it. Somewhere I read 10 million CV axles are replaced a year. Perhaps I should open a shop and only do these. Good luck to all that try to do it themselves.
