I'm planning on having my timing belt replaced soon and was just wondering if it's really necessary to replace the water pump at this interval, how long do water pumps last in the D series motors?

It's common practice to just replace the water pump while changing the timing belt since everything is accessible. A waterpump is not really that expensive so why take that risk?

I already know that it is a common practice to change the water pump when the timing belt is replaced. I'm asking whether or not anyone has seen a water pump ever break due to old age (considering that the rest of the cooling system is operating properly).

Spin the gear on the pump if it is still tight and not leaking... I usually run it. If it feels loose and it leaks then replace it... its only 50 bucks.
