No Converter? 97 GTP

Is there any reason that it wouldn't be good just to put a straight pipe in place of the cat. converter? I'm just thinking why even mess with putting in a new converter if I don't have to. Besides being maybe a little louder and we don't have sniff tests in the state I'm in. What possibly could it effect? Can anyone tell me whether or not my 97 GPT would run better worse or indifferent?
Thanks!
Thanks!

it's going to run better because it flows better without the cat. That's why most people people take them off or run catless pipes at the track. if you can get away with it, it's a good way to grab a couple extra HP.

And a constant check engine lite that can mask real problems and a federal violation, regardless of no state inspection.

:werd: to Max, not to mention possible driveability issues due to no exhaust back-pressure and your car possibly sounding like a Ricer/poser. Illegal is illegal, regardless if you could get caught.

Technically straight pipes are intended for "offroad use only". I can see doing that if you race your GTP but regardless of whether your state has strict or any green laws we should all do our part to protect the environment. I still use a hi-flow CAT that works fine.
If you decide to use the straight pipe which is your decision and at your own risk then you can preclude any SES/CEL light or DTC code that may set with an inexpensive 02 simulator which is connected at the electrical connector of the rear 02 sensor or have the PCM custom programmed to inhibit any DTC like P0420 that will most likely set.

Wow, thanks for answering my question. I guess I didn't think that it would be illegal in our state since we don't have inspections here I wasn't thinking anything about federal issues. Anyway I guess I don't understand what you mean "driveability issues." It would seem that less back pressure would be better. As in my case right now with a clogged cat I'm sure it is going to better? What is going to trip the SES light? I guess I should explain that I could care less about gaining any hp since I don't consider myself a so called "hot rodder" that wants to go see if I can beat a mustang somewhere. My pontiac is a daily 100 mile round trip to work and home car that just needs to run. The supercharger is nice when I need to get around some idiot that is holding up traffic, but that is about the extent of my "hot rodding." Thanks for replying though. I appreciate it.

What is going to trip the SES light????????? Running a straight pipe. The rear 02 sensor measures the oxygen content and whether the CAT convertor is operating efficiently. Therefore, without a CAT convertor you WILL!!! get a SES light.
BTW - Real hot rodders follow the law and seek out blowing the doors off a Mustang at an area where it is legal like the dragstrip not "somewhere" like on the street. :grinyes:
If you have a bad CAT convertor then get it fixed properly by getting it replaced with an OEM or inexpensive aftermarket and you won't have to worry about it.

Geez chill out Mike. You know people get on here to get your valued advice because most people are not as smart as you when it comes to cars. I didn't see your previous post prior to my last post. I apologize. I'm sure you have heard many dumber questions on here then the one that I posted. I wasn't trying to offend anybody with the "hot rodder" remarks. It's just that most of the people on here immediately think whenever you ask questions on here that your trying to beat the guy in the next lane. The "real hot rodders" are not usually the ones asking the questions on here now are they. Its just us low lifes that try to save a little money on commuting and daily transportation. I'm taking it to have it replaced only because you shamed me into doing it.
You have a great day and I'll be sure not to bother you any more.

Who is Mike? No problem and I wasn't offended so no need to apologize. We give advice on this forum to help fellow Grand Prix owners not shame them so I hope you did not take it wrong. And there are no dumb questions only dumb answers, however, you will get a variety of replies and possibly negative comments when it comes to certain issues like removing a CAT convertor. No one is forcing you to get the CAT convertor replaced or calling the cops on you. That decision is yours and you were provided with answers in the alternative to include the side effects....i.e. that you would get a SES light.
BTW - If you think this forum is bad try some of the others related to Grand Prixs and see how you get treated there. Even on AF I have yet to see an issue addressing deleting CAT convertors, adding a straight pipe and/or the legality of such work out to everyone's satisfaction so I keep on a close eye on these type of posts. If you post an issue whether routine or controversial then people will weigh-in and have a perfect right to do so as long as it is in good taste, complies with AF rules, and doesn't involve flaming others.
You have a nice day too.
