Daytime Running Lights Defect 2001 Sierra 2500HD

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD 4X4. Instead of the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) being on, the headlights are always on. Everything seems to function correctly, it's just that the wrong lights are on during daylight. It seems that the sensors think that it is always dark out. The bulbs and fuses are all fine. Could it be the sensors on top of the dash are out, or could it be the control module or......?

I think the sensor for DRL is in the grill somewhere (but I could be wrong). I do have the 2000 factory manuals and can look this up later tonight if no one else knows.

According to my 2000 Factory Manuals the light sensor is in the top part of the instrument panel. It looks like it is near the vents for the windshield and you have to take the upper dash cover off to get at it.

On my 2001 Suburban company truck the sensor is a small black dome on top of the dash on the right side of the center defroster vent.
If you cover it up with clutter, the headlights come on.

Thanks guys, I know where the sensors are. I'm just wondering if that is the problem or if it could be something else. I don't really want to pull the dash cover off.

Your best bet it to use a scanner that can communicate with the BCM or take it to a shop that has one of these scanners. That will tell you if the sensor is bad or not.
