Crazy Problem... Shifting problems!

I have a problem... when I shift into gear (no problem shifting into gear) the rpms shoot way up out of the ordinary... yes I do release the clutch... It feels like the car is trying to catch up to the engine... this car has no modifications done to it... its an 04 Si with 72,000 miles (don't ask).... I have no clue to what is going on... this car is known to accelerate reasonably well stock.. well the wheels spin in first gear... they now "DON'T" spin in second at all... please help... is it the flywheel... i dont think its the tranny because it shifts fine (no grinding or anything) it only involves the acceleration of the car in any gear... if you own this type of car... drive at 40 mph in fifth gear and accelerate quicky... the rpms should really go no where in your car... mine the rpm's shoot way up to 6500... this is not suppose to happen... pleas help... any help is better than no help at all! Thank You!

my $.02. its time for a new clutch, as this one is worn out.



Note: Spinning or chirping the tires in any gear is just a bad idea. It doesnt make you faster and is just beating on the clutch and tranny.

i know chirping the tires in any gear is bad for the tranny.. i was just saying that because the car was able too.. and it won't now.... i was just showing an easy example of what is happening... Do you think the clutch needs just an adjustment because I thought clutches tend to go bad over time... not almost immediately over the course of a week.. thanks for the reply.. if it is just the clutch.. i will be happy with that... not something drastic that I have never heard of...

Clutches tend to go slowly over time, but as they start to slip they start to fail that much more quickly, and then you run the risk of glazing the clutch... which just makes things worse.


Curious, do you rest your foot on the clutch pedal when your not shifting?

im not going to lie... i believe I have.... but not normally. I believe the only time when I may be resting it on the clutch is when I am accelerating 1 thru 3 when pulling onto a highway.. After that my foot is next to the clutch and again that is only with hard acceleration thats it.... Good point never thought of that... whats that reasoning for your question? I also failed to mention this at the beginning, the engine light is "not" on. Everything feels and appears normal with the exception of the acceleration. Thank you again!

Just curious as most of the time premature clutch wear is caused by two things.

1. Abuse such as drag racing
and
2. Ignorance; I know a lot of people that rest their foot on the clutch pedal, and that just causes extra wear on the clutch due to it sliping more often. It seems to take 1 destroyed clutch to teach them not to do that.

I did take the car to a drag strip when i had like 20,000 miles on it... only once though... i thought it was an early death for the car.. never went back.. i let the professionals do their work...... but its 50,000 miles later so i dont think that was the major cause... im taking it in to be checked on saturday... i will be sure to let you know what the deal is... I will admit i found myself checking where my left foot was while driving and it wasn't sitting on the clutch... i would have never thought of that... we shall find out the damage... i think its the clutch... and I hope thats only it!!!

Yea your racing at the track had nothing to do with it. I took mine with 1500 miles on it..Figured it was a nice way to break it in.. Sounds like a shot clutch as Lvapex states.

yea its the clutch... im looking at $900 to fix it... didn't know it was going to be that much.... Honda wanted to charge me $1,200.... oh well... i obviously wasn't babying the car and this is the price I pay... well... im getting it done this thurs or fri... i will post any updates about the final conclusion... thanks!!

72,000 miles isnt bad. I got 85,000 out of mine with a combination of Daily driving, Autocross and open track events... thats alot of use & abuse.

I would suspect some one who only daily drove the car could get 100,000 or so out of a clutch.

That puzzels me because I have never taking it out autocrossing at all.. basically its a daily driver and thats it... well im taking it in on Friday.. and i shall find out whether or not it is the clutch... if its something simple... so be it... if its bigger.... i don't have a lot of cash!! I hope not!!! Thanks!!

well... car is turning out worse than expected... I need a new flywheel.... a new clutch... (A NEW MOTOR MOUNT)... motor mount was totally unexpected... I snapped it... I saw the motor mount and its snapped... Beware about this because I have only taking it out to the track once.. and that was 50,000 miles ago... Do I street race... no.. I do not.... Not worth losing my car... But I do frequently accelerate.. otherwise car is at 72,000 miles and the car is great... as far as cost goes... im out a grand... and if someone wants to take out their own clutch to replace it... good luck... because the whole subframe needs to be taking out.. and part of the suspension... my advice take it to a mechanic... K-Series motors allow no room to work!! Thanks again!!
