Hello!

I have a 2001 Tahoe that seems to make a low humming sound when I activate the 4x4, snow or rain it doesnt matter. The humming definitely goes away when I switch it off.

Were these trucks known to have any 4x4 problems?

Could be something as simple as needing some differential oil/fluid?

Any ideas would be great!

Also.....if you happen to know how to easily remove the windshield fluid tank Id appreciate it.

Were you actually in 4wd or were you in auto 4wd, because ethier one will naturally make more noise then 2 wd while driving.

I also have 01 tahoe. Now I know everyone will post that all 4x4 make noise and this is typical GM. blah blah blah. of course is makes more noise right it is another gear mesh turning. Any rate, we now have 100k and it just started to make a brr sound like a bad wheel bearing can make. I have narrowed this one down to the Left side spider gear. the half shaft spins regardless of 4 wheel engagement, but once in 4 wheel it is then loaded. I have some noise in 2 wheel and increases in 4 wheel. I had the carrier bearings and pinion bearings "replaced" at 32k (under warranty), but that noise was different.

If you raise the front end off the ground slowly spin the wheel and I found the noise that way. I also replaced the axle needle bearings and seals with no change (just no more leak). By the way my 89 has 225k with virtually the same axle configuration.

My question to all of this is has anyone had to have the spiders replaced????

This is my first Chevy and SUV at that so I dunno, it could be a normal sound. I have owned two Dodge P/U's over the past 6 yrs and dont recall the front end making this kind of noise at all, unless maybe I had the 4WD engaged on a dry road but I think that was different sound too.

The weather is finally breaking here in NNJ so I might try to get under there and check the diff fluid level just to be sure that's ok......I dont know why but Im thinking it sounded like a humming that would come from dry diff.....probably way off but atleast it'll give me some peace of mind. :iceslolan

Any other tips would be GREATLY appreciated!
