Wiper problem

I have looked over the threads on the wiper motors not parking. Well that happened to me a couple days ago. I went to get in the van today and apparently the same thing happened to my wife and the they would not park, however, the wipers would also not move up and down either.

I popped the hood and had a look under wiper cover, the motor was moving but the wipers were not. After having a closer look I found a pin about 3/4 of an inch long lying on the wiper motor bracket right next to the wiper crank. I guess that is the park pin. I see a couple places where it could go but I am pretty lost. I got a haynes manual, it tells me the spacing for the crank arm but that is about it. I don't know if this pin is supposed to be welded somewhere or what.

I picked up a new wiper motor but it doesn't come with anything but the motor. I guess I will take that back. Nobody at the parts stores knows about the crank on top.

Does anyone have a picture of how this is supposed to be set up or should I head to GM or a junk yard and look for the crank assemby?

Thanks
Kevin

....After having a closer look I found a pin about 3/4 of an inch long lying on the wiper motor bracket right next to the wiper crank...

Is the pin about 1/4 inch in diameter? It could be the pin on the eccentric that locks or engages the eccentric during operation. (The eccentric sits on top of the motor shaft and attaches to the wiper arm linkage).

Can't imagine how it would fall out...it should be pressed into the plate that is sandwiched between the top and bottom plate on the eccentric.

Find another vehicle and look closely at the eccentric. If necessary pick up a new eccentric at the wreckers. You may have to take the linkage attached to the eccentric too in order to get the eccentric out of the vehicle, but hey, a few spare parts never hurt anybody. :grinno:

Clean the eccentric (and linkage) up first, lubricate it and look for any damage to the small lever and brass spring on the underside of the eccentric. This small lever is what causes the wipers to park when you shut them off.

Without the 3/4 inch pin in place, the motor will just spin the eccentric center plate. Since this is a metal to metal arrangement with very little lubricant, it won't be good for the motor or the eccentric if left unattended.:nono:

My thoughts.
