i have a 89 4x4 automatic V-6 deluxe pickup truck and the shifter on the console gets stuck in PARK alot.
I also have an intermittent starting problem on the 4x4.
the battery and battery cables and starter are fine, but i am guessing that the intermittent issue might have to do with a bad park-neutral switch on the vechicle.
i remember my shifter getting stuck in PARK many times and it was hard as heck to get it to move into DRIVE.
It would just jam in PARK. I would literally have to manhandle it very roughly to get it out of PARK into DRIVE. Is this what they mean by a bad park--neutral switch?
and do you have to replace the whole SHIFTER to replace the park-neutral switch in a 4x4 89 V-6 Toyota deluxe pickup [xcab], or is the park-neutral switch just a tiny little part in the shifter assembly?
is it expensive to change the park-neutral switch? is it a major job that takes a few hours at the shop??

Having to manhandle the shifter sounds like a mechanical problem, maybe in the shifter/linkage assy, possibly the trans.
The neutral start switch is usually in the shifter assy, but it is mounted down on the trans on some vehicles. It's usually a simple job to replace.
