1995 Grand Prix...transmission issues

Hi. Bought my son a 1995 Grand Prix SE last week. had it in the shop to get the radiator fixed last week. (Maybe some of you remember me from then) and it also needed brake pads, rotors, and repairs to the tune of $800+. Well, he's been driving it...today, he drove us to an event at church and as he's driving, the transmission slips when he comes to a complete stop and try's to start back up again AND when he accelerates, you hear a CLUNK as the RPM's level out and drop back down to cruising levels. He said that he didnt' have this problem until a couple of days ago when he tried the 2nd gear start button (I asked him if he had any clue what he was doing when he decided to "push the little red button" and he said no he just wanted to see what it did. I don't even know how that particular "knob or button" is supposed to work and the owners manual isn't really clear.) ANYWAY...had it towed (thank GOD for AAA!) to the shop tonight. But, is this a MAJOR :2cents: issue or a MINOR :2cents: issue? What is this gonna take to fix? (:nono: he KNOWS not to use that button or knob again with out learning more about it.) Any one who might have an answer and can respond, your comments would be greatly welcomed! THANKS!

Also, it would help to post the mileage on the car.
