1994 S-10 First gear only

!994 S-10 Blazer I have 1st and reverse gear only. If I get up to 40 and let off the gas it goes into 2nd but wont shift on it's own. Any ideas? It was towed 20 miles, could that have caused a problem?

Why was it towed?
Was it working before being towed?
What is the service and repair history and mileage on it?
First step fluid level and condition of fluid.
Then get it on a transmission/engine capable scanner and check for codes and read out data.
If any codes post back codes.
