The anti theft light on most Fords flashes wether you have aa alarm or not. I think they did this as a theft deterent. As for the remote. There are different types of Ford remotes. Two types that I know of that wont interchange.

For programing it varies between models, but usually you turn your key from run (not start) to off between 5-8 times until the door locks cycle. Once they cycle you hit your remote's lock button within 20sec or so and your remote is programed.

If you have two remotes to program or have remotes that are previously programed that you want to keep you have to program them all at once within the 20sec periode. Any remote that was previously programed will be erased.

Welcome to the forum!

The antitheft system and remote keyless entry are two different things. The antitheft system is part of the Passive AntiTheft System (PATS) and that is what the blinking light on the dash is for. This system uses keys with RF transponders and an antenna ring around the key cylinder switch. If non-programmed keys are used to attempt to start the system, the PATS system is enabled and will prevent the Explorer from starting.

Remote keyless entry is not tied in to the PATS system. If you want to find out if you have remote keyless entry, follow the ignition key cycling sequence. If the steps denisb posted don't work (although that does sound correct) you can search this forum for keywords "cycling" or "keyless."

Guys, they said it was a '93. Ford didn't start the PATS system until the late 90's

Doh! You're right, 1998 was the first year for the Explorer to get PATS.
