anyone know if bmw dealer can test an ecm out of the car?

They may be able to but they'll just plug your car in and do it that way. The ECU is a storage device as well which decides on inspection times etc according to how the car is driven. IE drive it hard and the services will be required more often. Depends what you want to know really I suppose. I've just had to replace the ECU on my E30

200 ffin quid for a reconditioned one. You have to return your old one as well so it can be salvaged for parts etc. A new one is around the 400 mark I think. If your in the UK I can recommend BMwise. Make sure you get the right one as well(count the connection pins) cos there is 3 types. Their number is 02083 035211. Delivery is a tenner. I've had trouble finding parts before for mine cos it's the earliest type but they've always come through for me. Good luck

The one in my Ti burnt out last week leaving me stranded. It only cost me $85 for a new one from the dealer, but that was for the lowly m42.
