I have a 2000 silverado LS extended cab 4x4. 4.8L engine. how can i find out which tranny i have?

I think 4L60E is the only automatic offered on the 4.8. The pan on it should be square.

What's the difference in the 4l60 and 4l80? which trucks got the 80? can i get a stronger one?

Biggest difference between the 60e and 80e.... Size, the 80e is damn near bulletproof. The 60e not so much. HD's and I believe the AWD SS came with the 80e. A conversion is available and relatively cheap outside the price of the 80e. Only a new crossmemeber and harness are required (I think). What I would like to see is someone do a 4l60e to 6l80e conversion.

The awd silverado ss came with a 4l65e. A 4l60e can be made to hold alot of horsepower, and several performance trans companies build them. Flt makes the level IV 4l65e that is damn near bullet proof. Alot of guys building these trucks to go fast are going to the 4l80e. Speed engineering makes a full 4l80e conversion, which includes the driveshaft, trans brace, converter, trans, and wiring harness upgrade, but it isn't cheap. For most applications, the 80e is overkill, because it will rob a good bit of power from your stock power. I'd look into getting a build from FLT, teamtripp,etc if you want to keep the 4l60e or upgrade to the 4l65.

About all I know of it - is it was designed to handle the heavier load/torque needs that the 6 liter high output engine puts on it. :)

There are no differences visually on the outside, and the only real difference is that the 65e's come standard with 5 pinion planetaries and steels. I'm not 100% sure, but I also think the 65e comes with a hardened output shaft. That's the differences with the two as far as stock goes. Alot of people convert their 60e to 65e trans, but the best way to go if it takes a crap is to have everything built with performance parts.

You could also beef up the clutch pack and add a shift kit to a 4l60e and have a pretty good tranny. Unless you are going to be making a lot of hp and torque or pulling/hauling a lot of weight then the clutches and shift kit will do you good. BTW if you don't service the tranny, no matter the tranny, you are going to kill it. For more info on shift kits for the 4l60e see http://www.transgo.com/sk_generalmtrs.php

I know all too well. :iceslolan We're dropping one out of project Zeus next weekend to put in a fuddle 2800 converter. Man, I'm not looking forward to dropping that pig of a tranny/converter out of that truck. :frown:

Thats what I did, I got the famous P1870 code, brought it to the dealer, they told me they had to rebuild the tranny $ 2800! Then I read something about the TransGo shiftkit, got one off Ebay for $35, spend a day under the truck and it shifts like new, I always load it up 3/4 to 1 ton I use my truck to work!
