Service Vehicle Soon and Trac light

My 2000 Intrigue is giving me starting problems. I usually turn the ignition key to the on position then wait a few seconds then proceed to move the key to the start position to engage the starter. Lately when I try to engage the starter all the lights go off on the dash and nothing happens....after a few tries the car usually starts, and once in awhile the SVS and trac lights stay on (as the car is running).

Any ideas?

I've ready other posts similar but most say that the security light is also a factor, its not for me.

Any help would be apreciated, I guess I'm leaning towards replacing the ignition cylinder.

Thanks.

Before replacing the ignition cylinder, check your battery cables, take them loose from the battery and clean off any and all corrosion and make sure they are good and tight, I almost replaced my ignition switch as well with similar symptoms, but checked the cables for kicks, and havent had a problem since.

With the intermittance of the SVS and Trac lights, I would check all the connections for your wheel speed sensors on all 4 wheels. Basically looks for wires behind each wheel and thats what youre looking for. Check that they are in good shape, and also make sure they are mounted properly on their little clips.

If you are the DIY kind of person, you can have the car scanned by a dealership or mechanic to pull the codes from the ABS system, and that should give you more insight as to what the problem is. I was having similar symptoms, had mine scanned while I was getting new tires(no charge for it that way) and it turned out to be a bad wheel speed sensor, so I changed out the hub assembly after buying a slighly used one for 60 bucks, and here it is at least 6 months later with no problems.

I agree with checking the battery cables and I have done that, actually I even replaced the battery since it was 7 years old. As for the ABS sensors wouldn't I see an ABS light?

Oh Im sorry I misread it and assumed the ABS light was on, you can still have the car scanned, because the Traction system should, I say should, have codes stored as well, but dont quote me on that.
