Crank Position Sensor

Does anybody know where the Crank Position Sensor is on a 1992 Chevy Lumina Z34? My car will not start. It is getting fuel and I checked for spark and it was weak. It was dull and not strong at all. So I know this is an ignition or electrical problem. I had the ignition module replaced and 2 of the coil packs. The engine will crank but not start. So I would like to replace the Crank Sensor just to rule that out. If that is not my problem then would a slipped timing belt cause weak spark/no start? Thanks.

the crank sensor is located in the rear side of the block (toward the firewall), just above the oil pan rail, slightly toward the passenger side. It is held into the block with one 8mm headed bolt, and has a two-wire connector.

richtazz is correct about his description location, but you do have to be in the right position to see this thing at all. what I do want to let you know about is when you replace the crank sensor you might want to replace the entire wiring connections to be on the safe side, because the bright engineers at chevy ran the harness behind the crankshaft pully, and if you have more than 100K it has probably rubbed through. And the same for the timing chain if it hasn't been done then yes it needs it I'd be willing to bet you the chain is loose and the damper broken. Tell you what... just drive it off a cliff and get the 400-600 dollars it's worth and get a japanese toyota, not an american made one. But seriously, make those repairs and it might last you another 100K

I do not know if I would get to hasty about changing that crank sensor. I am in the middle of this now. It broke off. A piece is still in the hole. It looks like I will need to pull the oil pan and pound it out from the bottom. It is a complete pain in the tail where it is located. Has anybody been down this road? I do not even know if it will fix my problem. I know it is bad now! I should look at that cable harness for sure, and possibly the timing chain. It looks like I will have several weekends on this, yet. I have been in know hurry because my truck has been getting me where I need to go. With fuel at $2.70 something a gallon I need to get it fixed soon.

I hope I'm not too late on your reply but if you're willing to go through a bit more trouble, don't take of the oil pan just yet, break off the rest of the plastic on the crank sensor exposeing the metal prongs and get a strong grip with a pair of vise-grips and hit the grips with a hammer till it comes out. it is a bit more trouble to do but with the mileage on these cars, if you take off the oil pan you might want to replace the oil pump just so you give yourself a bit more peace of mind knowing it's been done. be careful, there are two different size oil pumps 5/8" and 3/4". don't half-ass this part of the engine, this is make or break time so pack that pump with all the vaseiline you can, the pump, the pick-up tube, the bottom of the engine itself. if anyone has questions I will do my best to help out, I have become intimately familliar with this vehicle, I hate it.

I know that this is way too late and I hope that you got everything fixed okay, but for future reference, I had a crank sensor pretty much deteriorate on my 89 Regal 3.1. Heck of a time trying to get the remaining base out so my guy put his long nozzle tip on the air hose & blew in through the oil filler tube. Whaddya know, popped right out.
