Shifter, again...

Hi guys and gals, its been a while
Well, the shifter in my 2000 GP GT acted up again, and i am having the nasty "key just wont come out" problem (for the second time, this shifter is from a 1999 GP SE), so i purchased a shifter online that was pulled from a 2003 GP GT/GTP and i put it in.
Now, while the engine was on, it seemed to work fine except for the fact that i reallly had to press the brake down to get it to shift out of park, and sometimes i would have to hit the button twice. But, the key came out when i turned the car off.
The only thing that made me wonder is when the car is in Run, i can not shift the gear like i normally should, or, maybe im nuts and you cant do this.
Another problem that i thought was nothing, but maybe is something is still there. The gear indicator light seems to disappear sometimes, but comes back when i have my foot on the brake, or i press the button on the shifter. Maybe its linked?
I think i have a bigger problem than the shifter alone, but thats why i came here,
thanks in advance

Do you have any other electrical anomalies like heater blower acting up, DIC going out, door/key chime going off for no reason? If so, you may have a bad ignition harness assembly or dirty/bad connections at the battery.

I've god a bad/going blower motor resistor (no fan on 1 setting) but it came with the car when i bought it two years ago, old owner knew about it too, perhaps it was always there, but other than that, nothing else has been acting up with the electrical system, or anything else

check the battery and the cables/connections first. A low battery/bad battery connection will cause BTSI and key removal problems.

hey again rich,
I checked the battery and it reads a strong 12volts, i cleaned the connectors as well.
I put in the second shifter again, and the gear indicator light still doesnt work unless i have my foot on the brake, and then sometimes it still doesn't.
I have press the button on the knob twice to get it out of park, sometimes three times before it engages, and the key also got stuck again when i turned the car off, but i was able to get it out without sticking a stick into the bottom of my steering wheel.
So, Unless i bought a bad/going shifter, i think i have bigger problems than just the shifter itself.
Any insight guys?
Im looking to get the car on the market by June...at this rate i might as well give it away.
**Update**
The shifter is now completely useless again, it wont shift out of park, and i can't get the key out without manually disengaging it.
This is the 3rd shifter I've been though, what the heck could the problem be?

OK, hate to beat a dead horse...
But I'm looking to sell the car now, but i need to get this (one) problem fixed before hand.
THe original wire-harness (from the dealer) had two wires cut, (if you're looking at the plug, it is the top two [pink and green] wires)
I tried that harness hopping it would would with the other shifter, and it didnt, of course.
So, I don't know if i should just keep replacing the shifters until i find one that works. I'm not a mechanic, so I don't know where to look to investigate, does anyone have any ideas?

Rich suggested the battery is weak. Just by measuring the voltage with a DVOM is not a legit test for a weak battery. You need to have it load tested. Also, i think that before you go and start replacing the shifter again, it would probably be beneficial to you if you had a wiring diagram of this system. You will be able to find out exactly what circuits are grounded together. This is what it sonds like to me, a loose or bad ground connection. I will see if I can find one for you.
