My New Model Well Underway

Well for the last few weeks i have been scratch building a model from lots of left over parts.
When guiddy said he had some car body's and one of them was the Volvo 850 that i enjoyed making so much it got me thinking.
So i have been building away without saying anything in case my idea failed. Ive been waiting for the body to get here and hopefully it would fit.
Well today it arrived and i shall share my little project with you all :D :D
Still got plenty to do......wiring etc.....but it gives you an idea. Just still testing the fit of parts etc.

Photo of Volvo after cutting the front off

The inside of the car....Mostly scratched built like roll cage etc.
Most of the parts are left-overs from others

Only some little changes need to be made

That just looks superb, and what a great project! There is real satisfaction in such scratch build subjects, but they can be so time consuming!
I was a complete prat and obviously didn't include all the parts I planned to, and so will get them sent off!
What do you plan to do regarding a rear wing? How big do you plan for it to be?
How are you going to paint it? Full on drag car or what???:D

Do you want any Volvo decals with these other bits?

I have found windows, front grille, front and rear lights and rear spoiler.
I will post them tomorrow after work.

If you could send anything you have left over would be cool....lights/windows/grill/decals etc....should be able to find a use for them on it.

Dont know what to do about a rear wing...kinda like the look of it without one !!!

Paint....i'm open to idea's....you guys have any ???

Hopefully of to the model shop today and see if he has the "wiring" and small hoses etc that i ordered to start some of the wiring.

Well start to sand the body today to remove all the "seem lines" from the body.

Well hopefully get some time to get a light coat of primmer on the body.

You got any spare Funny Car decals?

I have sent you a few VOLVO decals, like the 850 logo, 2 Volvo sunstrips, etc.
I see it having a funny car style paint job!

Wing wise, don't all Drag Cars have wings?

UPDATE....Have sanded the body with 800. I have used white putty to fill all the door handles/boot holes and touring car wing holes. This well slow things down as the door hole handles are large and will take a few goes at getting just right.Well take a while to dry.
I have sat the body back on and have cut the hole in the bonnet.
I marked it out and cut it out with a modelers hacksaw.
Removed the bonnet pins and filled them and well sand it .
Been mucking around getting the bumper to fit the front(whats it off Dan ?) and got it just right.
Have decided to built a Prostock type wing for the back.

The front bumper is a standard 850 bumper, off Tamiya's Estate Volvo 850 Turbo!
As you may have guessed, I will do an Estate 850 with the deep front bumper, BIG wheels, slammed suspension etc., but as a road car!;-)

As for the wing? Good man!

My model shop i go to has different size round lengths of plastic.
I then just make a copy on paper as to what i want, then cut it to the same size. Any bits that need to be bent i very carefully heat the plastic over a candle till it can be bent to shape. Then i superglue it all together then putty up the joints. When dry, sand and paint.

Here's another view of the cage...

The body is almost finshed and ready to be primmed to see what the putty well look like. You have to leave the putty for a few days to allow it to "shrink"
Have sanded the whole body with 1800 grit paper.
Have removed all the seem lines and molding marks.
Be painting it later today.

primera man
09-14-2001, 03:23 AM
Painted the body with the undercoat and all went well.

Have to fill 2 door handles again with putty as they are not quite right looking

Have to wait to sand again then paint again.

Have started on some of the wiring inside...being a lot harder then i thought.

Body is now painted and thinking about what i'm going to do next to it.
Either leave it all blue, or do some kind of small graphic on it in different colours.
Painted the body with 4 coats of Tamiya TS15 Blue.
The body was left for 10 days before giving it a very light sand with 1200 grit wet-n-dry in places.
Then used Tamiya rubbing compound to give it a real good cut.
Then waxed the body with Tamiya wax to bring out a nice deep gloss. :D :D

Next will be the masking of the body to paint the rubber around the windows in semi-gloss black and the rubber on the roof black too.

Here's how mine works. (diagram attached)

Take one hanger. Bend to suit. If needed, put some ballast on the bottom part.

:D

The car it made it for was the MR2, and right now it's holding the NSX. It may be tailored to hold mid-engined cars best by design. The top part fits inside the body along the backsides of the doors, just under the windowline. Mid-engined cars with side scoops may have an advantage to this approach.

Yep....thats the baby ....real easy to make....and easy to paint all around the whole car

They should be German Grey Warren!

But modeller's license allows them to what colour you want, especially as it is a drag car!!!:D

Thought i would spend a few hours on this today along with the GTR.

Made the windows up, but have had to go with the original front window from the kit as i could not get the new window to "shape correctly" .

Just wouldnt sit right no matter what i tried so i ended up cutting up the original. Try again tomorrow.

Body will stay plain blue. Spent 3-4 hours trying all different decals and in the end ripped them all of. The paint looks to good to hide under decals.
So i used rubbing compound and then a polish and the car will stay as you see it now.

Have still got the back lights to paint and the front section of the car.
I may go for a white front with a 45 degree angled paint line to match up with the blue.
Got the rear wing to finish building too

Front bit on to show what it's looking like.

Still needs painting and things still need fitting up correctly.

The bonnet will be a pain to try and line up nice with the rest of the car.

The chassis was a old one i had left over.
Made all the roll cage/tubs and front engine bay to fit a motor that was made up from more spare bits from the parts box.
The body was sent to me by Dan.....thankyou again !!
Windows are made from camera roll.
All other parts are left overs or made up from scratch.

Here's a better pic with some kiwi sunshine to show the colour off better !!!

Looks like the front is on the ground, or is it raised a little so as not to scrape?

Other than that, looks really hot man!!! Good job once again.

Sorry to bring this thread up from the dead, but I still can't get over how good that Volvo looks Pman. Takes a very good imagination to turn a Volvo into a dragcar! I want one now :D

Hey P-Man, that is one hell of a cool project! Very nice and it shows that with leftovers you still can do a lot!

Congrats!
