Starting Issues

2001 Olds Intrigue

Just changed plugs, air and fuel filter. The car has been starting hard. It will crank over for about 7-10 seconds before firing, just to immediately stall again. Then when you try to start it again, it will start but idle high for a few seconds. Once the car starts, it runs excellent. This problems started out only occuring once in a while but has progressed to every time you try to start the car. Any ideas?

what brand of plugs are you using and what's your gap, that's just a paper air filter -right.

-seems like you need to test that fuel pressure. Look on this site for fuel pressure regulator testing.

yeah, it's just a paper filter. The plugs are NGK's gaped at .050. I did notice an improvement in performance after changing these.

I'll move to the fuel pressure tomorrow and see what I get - Thanks.

put the old plugs back in and have the gap set at .060 -How long did you have the new plugs in.

-there are problems with non-GM plugs in the Intrigue.

There is no SES or SVS lights lighting up? -ODB2 codes, CKP sensor, Camshaft position sensor.

Then new plugs have only been in for about a week but I was having these same issues before I changed the plugs. The starting issues is what prompted me to changed the plugs and filters.

I did install the old ones back in and gaped at what you recommended but saw no difference.

I got caught up at work but I'm going to test the fuel pressure when I get home today to see if I'm having any issues here. After reading these forums I have noticed a big problem with fuel pressure regulators going out in the intrigues with this engine. It also sounds like they have been experiencing some of the same problems.

I am getting one code P0410 and it comes up as secondary air injection system malfunction.

I just tested the fuel pressure and it didn't seem to hold very well. It goes right up to 40 psi when you turn the key on and stays around 38 while running. But if you pressure the system and let it set, it goes from 40psi to about 20psi in 2 minutes.

FYI...I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the hard starting issues immediately went away. I read all of the issues other intrigue owners have had with a bad FPR but at first I didn't have the fuel in the vacuum line. But I did find gas in the vacuum line a few days later when I went to change the FPR. The car did sit longer this time though. I hope this serves helpful to some of you.

I have recently am having the same problem with starting my car. At first I tried fuel injector cleaner and now I am thinking about new plugs. From reading the forums I have narrowed down the problems, I think, to either the Fuel Pressure Regulator or the starter. How can I check if either is bad myself

I found out what my problem was. A while after I noticed the problem the car would not start at all. Come to find out that I lower intake gasket go out and was getting coolant into the pistions. One Lesson Learned
