Engine running cold

I just replaced the transmission in my 91. Now the engine is running much cooler than it had been. I replaced the belts and water pump a couple of months ago. I am thinking that we must have bumped something when we putting the tranny in. What should I check?

Are you using the correct thermostat? Is the guage good? Use a thermometer to verify actual running temperature.

Start by checking your thermostat... this is easily done by feeling the upper radiator hose as the car warms up. There should not be pressure or heat on the hose until the thermostat opens. If there is, then it is likely stuck open and not allowing the engine to warm up properly.

If it is a mid 90's model, the problem may be the housing that the thermostat sits in. If your pump and thermostat test good, and if you don't suspect radiator blockage, consider the housing. It is listed as a "water outlet" at the parts stores.

The guage is good. I had it in the shop couple of months ago. Had new belts and new water pump put in. It was registering in the center of normal, now it barely makes it to the "n" in normal.

Just thought about it... you may have a loose connection on the temp sensor, or even a bad sensor. When mine went bad it reacted the same way.

First verify that your thermostat is operating properly and water is circulating as it should.
