Transmission Trouble

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong here? My '94 BMW 325 I will no longer shift gears. I was on the highway the other night and seemed to be stuck in one gear....I moved the automatic shifter to Drive, tried to go to third, and nothing happened. But there was a lot of smokle coming out of the back of my car. I have a feeling Im in big trouble with the trasmission. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
