I drive in 3 on roads where the speed limit is 45mph or lower, simply because it helps me not speed. That aside, it's D.

I use 3 mostly for steep grades and winding roads. Even though it could be used for normal driving, I'll stick with D for the fuel economy due to paying $3.10 for regular gasoline. Oil companies are gonna love me when I start putting premium gas in my GTP once I get it on the road. I figure that overdrive gear in the GTP will be my best friend.

D is overdrive and will give you better mileage. 3 is the thrid gear and will give you a more responsive throttle but will cost you. I leave mine in D and use the cruise control as much as possible for good mileage.

Also, keep in mind that the torque convertor lock/unlock (TCC) function only works in overdrive (OD) at speeds above approximately 45 mph. It reduces rpms accordingly. This feature is for better fuel economy and often overlooked in the fuel economy equation. :grinyes:

That is :screwy:

What year and model Grand Prix do you have? On my '97 GTP, '01 Regal GS and '99 Regal LS TCC lock/unlock is totally inhibited unless you are in 4th (OD). All have the 4T65E-HD and 4T65E autotransaxles.

Ah, I have a '96 Monte with the 4T60-E. This whole car is odd, though... Like it's owner.
