Help with service nightmare on '98 Prelude

So I took my car with 191,300 miles on it that was running beautifully in to have the timing belt changed at a Honda dealership. I get the car back and within 10 miles it is obvious that the alternator has been killed. I make it home but it doesn't start the next day, and the dealership refuses to take responsibility. Instead they insist that it is the fault of the shop that replaced the alternator over three months ago. I wind up with a $312 charge to fix it and the dealership refuses to pay and of course the shop that did the alternator job insists that it is the dealership's fault.

Now it gets worse. When I get the car back I thought I noticed a smell like they had been sloppy and gotten some oil on the engine and it was burning. I expected this to go away, but it's only gotten worse. I checked my oil and in 200 miles I went through two quarts of oil. I put the oil in and in another 15 miles I must have gone through half a quart and I see some smoke coming out of the engine - it looks like it's coming from the back of the engine (towards the rear of the car) in the vicinity of the fuel injector (but not the fuel injector itself).

So I have lots of questions and I can really use your help-

1) I see cables running from the alternator to the timing belt cover so it seems logical to me that they shorted the alternator when they changed the timing belt, the dealer says NFW. Am I right here?

2) Is there something that could have been done incorrectly with the timing belt that would cause the smoke and the burning of all the oil?

3) Is there any possible way that working on the alternator could cause the problem with the oil?

4) Is this due to a serious problem like valve seals that mysteriously happened simultaneously with the timing belt change?

5) Is there something less serious that could cause this?

I am desperate for help!

Thanks.

On your car you have to remove the valve cover to do a timing belt.It sounds like they might have made a mistake when replacing the valve cover gasket.
As far as the alt.I really don,t see how they could have messed that up.

i got my car back from honda once and they messed up the valve cover gasket...leaked oil everywhere...but i just took it off, put it back on...and in the sharp corners put some sealant so it would stick well. If any wires look burned, or corroded to the alt then you're pretty much screwed because neither place will take the blame for that...so if you can rewire it yourself, and prob get a new alt then you might be in good shape...but if the alt is shot...you're SOL man
