I have a 1994 Trooper with 181,000 miles on the engine and recently had the heads remachined. Can anyone tell me how to determine TDC and how to set the timing? Help!!!!

why do you want determine TDC and for what cylinder and for what condition (TDC on compression stroke, e.g.) and to what purpose?

the timing is accomplished by correct timing belt installation, by aligning the crank marks to the mark on the oil pump and by aligning the cam gear marks with the marks on the metal coverings.

what engine do you have, SOHC or DOHC? it gets more complicated with the DOHC.

do you have any repair manual at all?

and curious -- why did you have the heads off and machined?

I removed the passenger side head because there was a knocking coming from cylinder one. The machine shop found 2 bad rockers on cylinder 1 position and replaced them. I had marked the head and cam shaft so that I could realign everything, but the shop hot tanked the head and lost my marks. This is a DOHC 3.2L V6. I have a Chilton repair manual that covers 81-96. I love my 94 Trooper and am trying to do what I can to extend the life of the engine. I use it to go surf fishing and pull a 94 Starcraft popup camper with it. Just last year I installed Old Man Emu shocks and springs.

Forgot to include that I need to determine TDC for the compression stroke.

Hi, Once you have the timing chain on correctly, TDC is determined at #1 cylinder, with all valves closed on the cylinder (compression stroke) and the timing mark on the balancer at the 0 degree mark on the timing indicator. Remember that you have to be sure of that, or the cylinder may not be on the compression/ignition cycle . Also, when the timing marks are aligned on the belts, no piston is at TDC, so you cannot use that for a reference.

Align mating mark on camshaft sprockets with that on timing chain as shown in Fig. 42.
Ensure the embossed characters RH, LH, IN and EXH on the camshaft (http://library.alldatapro.com/alldata/LIB~C19224~R0~OD~N/0/41746445/56622022/56622029/56622030/34853741/73661385/34853743/34872023).
Install each camshaft (http://library.alldatapro.com/alldata/LIB~C19224~R0~OD~N/0/41746445/56622022/56622029/56622030/34853741/73661385/34853743/34872023) with chain and chain tensioner on cylinder head.
Recheck timing chain alignment marks.
Torque camshaft (http://library.alldatapro.com/alldata/LIB~C19224~R0~OD~N/0/41746445/56622022/56622029/56622030/34853741/73661385/34853743/34872023) bracket retaining bolts to 7.4 ft. lbs.
Torque front plate retaining bolts to 12 ft. lbs.
Torque camshaft pulley retaining bolts to 41 ft. lbs. After completing this procedure, refer to Timing Belt (http://library.alldatapro.com/alldata/LIB~C19224~R0~OD~N/0/41746445/56622022/56622029/56622030/34853741/73661385/34853743/34872060) for installation of timing belt procedures.
