radiator overflow tank question

(93 3.1) Is there anything you can use to clean out the radiator overflow tank? Mine (as well as others' I'm sure) is foggy and very difficult to read. I've even tried using a flashlight to see the level, but to no avail. I believe you're supposed to check the fluid level in the radiator itself, not the overflow, but it would still be nice to be able to see how much is in there!! It's about time for a fluid flush and while it's empty, I would like to clean it out so I can read it.

I had same problem. I made a 1 inch hole in the top near the front of the resevoir so I could see inside and use a threaded PVC plug to keep it closed.

Remove the reservoir, flush it with hot water, fill it with hot water and a caustic soap such as automatic dishwasher detergent, and allow it to soak. Flush it again and use a baby bottle or hose brush to clean the interior of accumulations. Repeat as necessary until it is clean. I've had some really nasty ones, especially those with DexCool which has been neglected or ignored.

I actually changed the upper, lower, and heater hoses with AC Delco hoses except one of the hoses. Had to go to NAPA because AC Delco discontinued.

Anyway, one hose was a pain. A Dremel tool and a cutting disk because the factory installation reversed the clamps so I couldn't get it off.

As far as the overflow, I removed as others instrcuted and put purple stuff in. Now I read it, the dishwashwer would work better.

It's pretty clean now though. Refilled with Dex-Cool and hopefully go down the road some more.

Depending on the shape of the overflow tank, you can put your finger on the line on the outside, then look through the cap, and see the shadow of your finger if the coolant level is below the line.
