I have a 2000 Malibu with 93K miles on it and I was just curious how many miles all of you have on your Malibu and if you had any major problems down the stretch
I wanted to put a little money into my car since I really didnt have any major problems. Im looking to repaint it, put on a body kit and do a little engine work..........but before I do that I wanna make sure what the life expectancy is on this car
HELP!!:banghead:

Once you have the intake manifold gaskets changed, I havent noticed any particular problem.. Goto http://www.malibuclub.ca, or http://www.unitedmalibus.com for some inspiration and modification to these cars. :grinyes:

My 1998 Malibu LS is at 140,000. I have only had three problems with it:
1) Battery died. No Big Deal replaced battery.
2) Fuel pump replaced at around 90,000-100,000 miles.
3) Intake gaskets just replaced at 139,000 miles. Replaced them myself over a couple of days and the now the car is leak free and runs as good as ever.
I have wanted to buy a newer car but just can't sell this one as it has been the most problem free vehicle I haved owned. So I plan to own this one until it does start to give me problems. And even if more serious problems arise, I will have to weigh out the options as this car is cheap and very easy to work on.

I have a 2001 Malibu with 107K on it, my paint is peeling off for some reason showing black underneath, as if it was repainted. It has a small tick to it and I had the oil changed it there was metal shavings on the plug? What does that mean by the way? There isn't any smoke of any kind.

I have a 98 Malibu with 249,000 miles! The only problem i'm experiencing now is the theft lock issues. other than that, i really can't complain! it's been a pretty good car.

I'd say check your oil pan / rod bearings if your so inclined. Its pretty nasty in those oil pans. And get your tranny fluid changed / flushed + new filter.

I have a 98 malibu2.4 with 110000miles on it. it was a really good cartill we let our 16yr old drive it. It is anautomatic and he tried to drive it like it was a 3 speed. Now one of the spark plugs has oil leaking in it and the ABS is wrecked. otherwise it was a great car. I would like to fix it but afraid of how much it would cost. Anyone know? I think it is a 2.4L and had a lot of get up and go before ev en though it was a 4cylinder. Can anyone give me some advice.

That just it man, it was always changed on time. No special oil, but it was mostly due to the oil getting cooked up top where those intake gaskets are at. I just wanted people to see what it did on the bottom end, so if they have had a leaky gasket for a while, they need to drop the pan and clean / flush that puppy out! :)

98 Malibu V6 3.1 just turned 130k miles.
Replaced water pump @ 110k miles
Replaced alternator @ 120k miles
Getting a "growling" sound from drivers side front wheel. Gets worse when I turn right. Thinking it's the wheel bearing.
Just replaced front tires. I use Cooper Lifeliner Touring SLE very nice tire.

97 Malibu w/ 2.4L
-176000 Miles
-Replaced both front hubs
-Rear brake drums and shoes*
-Front brake pads*
*Hubs and Drums had to be replaced because of neglect
-New transmission*
*Again due to neglect
-Serpentine belt
-Coolant level sensor
-On second battery in eight years.
-Regular oil changes
Other than the big ticket item (tranny) the car has run perfect. Even being ten years old, I am the second owner and it looks and runs brand new.
I have to change a gasket on the rear cam shaft cover but that is not a big deal. Very small oil leak.

Your are right, it is the bearing. Mine started doing that so the hub had to be replaces. Just make sure the ABS sensor is securely plugged in else you may get a light on your dash.

The entire wheel hub has to be replaced. The berring is non-replacable by design. plan for $200.00

Did it actually end up being $200 a side? I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

'03 195,000 miles
Replaced:
Fuel pump - 130K miles
A/C - currently acting up (fixed)
Tires - on numerous occassions
Brake pads - twice
plugs, oil, etc. - regularly
This has been a very reliable vehicle, and probably one of the most trouble-free I've ever owned...
11/25/2007:
Coolant in oil - heads showed minor warpage, sent block & heads to be remachined, rebuilt engine from stripped block up replacing all gaskets, etc. - 190K miles
Seems to be trouble free once again :)

99 ls, 158,784 miles. Bought used with 38,000 on it.
alternator (week after I bought it. free)
parking brake indicator light switch (like 6984654 times. It's unplugged now)
front wheel bearings. I paid $125 each. I don't know if they're better or worse than the dealer part, but they're still good after 30,000 miles.
intake gaskets
muffler. a pinhole failed my state inspection.
Blower motor (2x)
Blower motor resistor
Abs speed sensor wiring (ongoing. the abs enable relay is sitting in my glovebox so the car doesn't try to kill me anymore)
left cv shaft
tie rod ends
water pump
New key after the old one wouldn't turn in the ignition any more.
Other normal replacement parts such as filters, brakes, tires, fluids, s-belt, etc.
Honestly it's been a good car. Most of the problems aren't particularly expensive and it's way easier to work on than my 92 topaz was, may it burn in hell.

That brought back memories. I had a late 80's Tempo that I used to refer to as the car from hell. First brand new car I ever bought. What a mistake.

1998 Malibu LS 3.1L ~ 173,000 + miles
1) oil changed every 3 to 6k miles
2) brake shoes and pads replaced every 10 to 12k miles
3) coolant replaced with the same orange Kool-Aid 120,000 miles
4) alternator replaced 125,000 + miles
5) fuel pump replaced, last week, 173k miles
6) replacement LH tail light on it’s way (thanks to kids next door, $23.99 GreedBay “Buy It Now” + $12 shipping w00T!!!)
General condition, great, except for the headliner and I have been putting off doing anything with it as the car has a sunroof, so, I am sure it will be about a million bucks to replace. Also, one of the 9 point factory wheels clear coat is starting to peel and looks like crap.
Would I buy another? If I knew it would last like this one has, you betchya!
