Hmm.. the other guys know the 1992 better than me..
I'm guessing the MAF sensor was disturbed or disconnected. Did these ones have a MAF on the Inlet Hose guys??
Are you seeing a "Check Engine" lamp on the dash?
Regardless; Check the electrical connections on the Air Filter Box lid and Cool Air Intake Tube.

There is an air sensor that screwes into the side of the air box. You might have some crud down in it, or the wire got knocked loose. Try cleaning the sensor. I believe it's in the lower half or the air box. I'll have to check, but I might have one of those sensors in my stash of stuff.

i had the same problem with my old 92 crown vic. as stupid as it may sound, the problem was that the lid of the air filter box was not sitting properly and caused the car to run rough. so i took it off and put it on and it was fine. could be something as simple as that!

OK, I'm thinking... misfiring, backfiring.. OMG!! I was just joking about the Avatar !!
Sounds like this would be ignition related. You have two Coil Packs, 4 wires each. Both get a signal from the Crankshaft Position Sensor to fire <through the EDIS module>.
You should rule out the Ignition System - Coil Packs, and the Throttle Position Sensor as suspects before you move on to the fuel system.
If a Spark Plug Wire is disconnected while the engine is running AND there is NO change in the running performance, that cylinder is where a problem exists.
The problem might be a bad Coil Pack (no spark, weak spark) fuel delivery, or worse.
Unless something else was disturbed, this can't be related to a new Air Filter.
You may want to remove the Cool Air Inlet Tube completely and inspect the Throttle Body for foreign matter. Also, have a very close look at the MAF wire to be sure it's not fouled.

The numbers are embossed directly on the top of each Coil Pack, right next to where the Spark Plug wire sets in. I believe #3 is on the passenger side.
PS: I lied, the numbers are embossed onto the Wire Boots....

PS:
According to RockAuto.com.. your looking at $40 to $70 depending on brand.

Sounds like it's running fine at idle, no missing, no backfiring during this test?
I had the same problem with a Camry, Coil Pack heats up then pop, sputter, bang, ping, 10% horsepower.... it was also throwing a great spark when it was cool or not under load.
Is there any fluctuation in idle speed when a plug wire was pulled off? I mean, was there one that you pulled off and there was no idle effect? If so, that's a cylinder that might have a clogged Fuel Injector, bad Spark Plug, etc.
