Is minute lube trying to pull a fast one?

I stopped in at Minute Lube today because I realized I needed an oil change and had to go on a 1000 Km road trip. I've never been there before and probably never will go again. They wanted to replace every fluids in the truck!

The guy told me that the rear end oil needed to be replaced every 20 000 kms and said that it looked like the original "miniral oil" I beleive is the way he described it, was still in and that usually this is replaced at 4500 km or your first oil change. Is he talking foolishness or have I been living under a rock and missed something? It's the first I've ever heard of replacing rear end oil so soon.

Oh and he also said that Ford uses synthetic in their rear ends, which almost lead me to ask him how synthetic oil could not go more than 20 000kms without being changed.

Thanks,

Denis

What year is your Explorer, which engine, and 2WD, 4WD, or AWD?

Also, what is your driving style with the vehicle? If you tow with it or use it for other severe duty uses, the maintenance cycle will be somewhat different.

Have you checked your owner's manual for the recommended service intervals for the fluids?

Sorry, Explorer Sport Trac 4.0 liter, 5 speed automatic. No hauling, 1/2 highway/city. Haven't check my manual yet, but I will when I get home tonight. I just found that 20 000km which equals about 12.5 Kmiles is pretty soon to be replacing rear end lube.

He is looking for easy money. Most Ford products, if there is no water ir bearing failure, will go well over 100k miles with no adverse effects on the rear end. Just make sure it stays up to the proper level and drive on.
