Impossible engine swap??

Ok... I own a 1984 Fiero 2M4, and I'm pretty much tired of fixing that old 2.5 L 4 cylinder in it. So........ I was planning on doing something with that bike that's been laying around forever, and taking the 1000 CC engine out of it, and MAYBE tossing it into the Fiero. Knowing my horrible mathematics skills and little power to weight ratio knoweledge, it most likley won't work out that great, huh? If that isn't sufficient enough power, I have two 1000 CC engines I can use for this oddball project. They are exactly the same from the same year and types of bikes. I've seen twin engines syncronized in vehicles before (Pikes peak Suzuki Escudo), but I was wondering if there would be enough grunt to even make all of that work worth while. I know there's plenty of room back there (I've seen V8's shoe horned in some Fieros!), just wondering about how much power I'd be gaining (or losing). Also, I think that a 13,000 RPM Revv out of a Fiero would be impressive enough! haha I do want to go with some sort of a bike engine or any engine in general that can either reach close to 10K RPM or produce a very similar sound. Any tips, pointers, suggestions, and coments would be greatly appreciated!! :iceslolan Thanx for you time!

Sincerely,
Marco

I've heard of someone trying something like this with a Fiero. I think the two engines should produce enough power, but getting them synchronized will be extremely difficult (lots of math)

I've seen a Fiero with a boat motor in it though, so anything's possible.

No, that had a 2-litre V6.

I saw a couple of Fieros at a car show last summer and they had Cadillac Northstar engines shoe horned in. They looked pretty bitchin.
I just though I would share this with you. I realize this option would cost $$$ but would sure impress your friends.

keep on keepin on!!

Probably not impossible, but it would be very unsatisfying, I would think. The problem being is that bike engines rev high but have little low end torque.
So you'd be revving the guts out of the engines to get the car moving, then the clutch would burn out.
I'd just find a transverse 60* V6 from some GM product and pop it in. If you could find a DOHC unit, that would be better.

Thanx for all the input so far! (and the correction on the pikes peak! lol). But yeah, I've seen some of those Northstars and 350's in the back of em. www.v8archie.com (http://www.v8archie.com) offers alot of mods for Fieros (including the Chevy 350 V8). Again, thanx for the input, and I'm looking forward to reading much more!

Actually, this is a really easy and effective engine swap.

The marine engine in question is a GM 2.9 liter inline 4. Externally it is the same as the stock 2.5 so it will just bolt in.

However, it is MUCH stronger internally and is designed to run at full throttle, max revs all day, a feat which would wreck the stock engine.

The marine 2.9 makes a stock 140 hp, which is an improvement on the original 2.5's 90 hp. However, all kinds of performance stuff can be added very easily.

I think you mean a 2.5l V6, and you would only be refering to the first version of the pikes peak escudo.
There have been several different versions of the Pike Peak Escudo, the last one had two V6s in it.

All things are relative of course. 160 ft/lbs (NA) sounds pretty exceptable to me off idle. Gearing of course would be a notable factor on how it would translate. 400hp NA, or 800 hp turbo'd doesn't sound too shabby either. (what I would build, if it was me)

For a guy that has "lotus" in his user name, I would expect a little more imagination in this area :D

what bike engines are we talking anyway? IMO, I'd pick a lighter car than the fiero, to really make those light motorcycle motors shine....but I think it would work well either way. Probably a combined motor/tranny weight of 400 pounds total. Hard to beat that ratio of power to weight

Bike engines into light weight cars are a common swap in the UK.
They like to put them into Lotus 7 replicas and Caterhams (caterham even do it as a factory fit).
But, Iv also seen them in Mini's, MG Metros and other small cars.
A Fiero might be pushing the weight limits, but two motors suitable connected shouldn't have a problem making it move, assuming you get the gear ratios right.

And that is where you encounter a problem, the gear ratios.
Just what sort of gear box are you going to need? What sort of ratios will it have, and how will you connect it all to the driver wheels?

not to argue, but all the spec things i read said 2-litre (1998cc)

i've only ever heard of the 2-litre engined one, never heard or seen the twin-engined version.

Your quoting a website that spells "cars" with a z.
Not exactly reliable information.

Its also very off topic :)

Wow!! Thanx for all the info so far guys!! :D And yes, I've heard about all the cars in the UK getting the beefed up bike engines (hence where I got my idea from). Now, I do realize that my Fiero weighs approximately 2600 lbs (don't quote me on that, rough guestimate) and throwing just one bike engine in there most likely won't be sufficient. In general my goal is to get the high revving sound out of this vehicle. My budget is extremely limited, that's why I was planning to go with things I already have. haha But I've heard some wacky tips for that nice high revv sound such as: Put a Yoshimira pipe on your current exhaust pipe (lol), or modify a "whistler" tip (aren't those illegal???) But anywho... those sounded somewhat odd and not too effective. lol Well... Now, I'm somewhat leaning towards the marine engine... lol Still, I would like that sound from it. Almost like the high pitch whine that a nicely tuned rotary makes... Maybe I'm just ranting on about something that's more expensive than what the whole car is worth. haha Well.... either way, all tips, hints, and pointers are very welcome! Thank you for all the info so far!! :D Oh, and about the Suzuki Escudo, I'm 90% sure that the 1996 Suzuki Escudo was the one that had the twin V6's. The car was making well in excess of 800 horsepower! Out of only a single V6 (even being twin turboed n such) it still seems like quite a feat for just one engine. I know it's quite possible, but it had to take the wear and tear of racing (off road racing at that!!) Also, I think I first heard of it having the twin V6's in Gran Turismo 2 or 3 (can't remember) lol. But again, thanx for the comments and imput! :D

Cheers!

Hey now... no hatorade please! lol Actually, I was the one who originally mentioned about the Escudo, so, it's me who's off topic. Not trying to burn anyone, just thought I should kinda mention who's the culprit behind the "off topic" topic. haha Still... any conversation is welcome by me! :D

Cheers!

I've done quite a bit of research on this exact idea. I've been kicking around the idea for years (and will eventually do it). Its not for the faint hearted though. It requires some decent fabrication skills to pull it off. If you want it to work really well, it also takes a very healthy chunk of money.

If you want a lot more details, we can discuss it, but it sounds like you're just bouncing ideas around, not really serious about pursuing this come hell and high water

Hey, thanx for the interest in sharing ideas with me... however I said my budget was limited as of now, not my determination. lol I have all the equpiment necessary (welders, cutters, grinders, benders, ect.) That also brings me to the point of doing a "chop top" on the Fiero... so, I realize how much work I have cut out for me with this car, just I wanted to feedback on wether it's REALLY worth doing something wacky like this or not. I'm mainly going for originality more than impressing anyone with raw power, you know? But thanx everyone for the input so far!! Keep throwing suggestions at me, I'm open for all of em!! :)

I've seen a fiero with 2 hayabusa engines in it... wild car.

so yes, it can be done :)
