Power steering...who needs it?!

Hi, I have a 2001 Grand Am GT and I have several problems. First off, my power steering went out this weekend, and I've been driving it ever since...alot. I believe my car has electronic variable assist steering...which I feel is pointless and is just to raise the price of a vehicle(that's because I don't know what it really does;))
So, I was wondering if I am going to hurt my car any worse by driving it without power steering. Also, how can I tell if my car does or does not have this EVA steering? Plus...how much would it roughly cost to have this fixed? I've heard several different numbers...
On to the next problem...my transmission has been acting really funny for a while now. The transmission sounds and feels as if it slams between drive and reverse. Also, it will shift hard about 50% of the time below 200 degrees, and will wind out slightly 50% of the time above 200 degrees. How much longer til it completely falls out from under my car, because I can't afford to get it fixed!? Really, I would just like to know what is causing it, and if it will get worse with time and miles...

The EVA is greatness, it helps out "roadfeel" I've driven some cars (namely big old Fords) that you litterally felt detached from the road when you drove them.

To my knowledge all '99 and up Grand Am GTs and most GAs with the 3400 engine has the EVO actuator. It is located at the bottom of the power steering pump. Look for an electrical connector with blue/red color coding. If you see the connector you have the variable assist power steering.
