Odd shifting of transmission

I have a 93 taurus. While driving, the car will drop gears (ie 3rd to first, or neutral) and then after some tricky footwork with the pedals, it wil snap back. this is becoming very frequent and may land me in an accident soon. is it the transmission going or could it be the TPS?

Get a code scan done, there may be some trans codes related to incorrect gear range and or others.. these codes may not turn on the check engine light... you need obdI scanner, they cost around 30 bucks or so, and are easy to use.. Your tricky footwork with the pedals sounds interesting, exactly what is it??? You may be in for some expense, I hope not.. some trans shops will diagnose for free, or small fee, they can scan for codes and run some pressure tests, use a locally owned reliable non-major trans shop, I'm staying polite..

Could it be a VSS going bad?

i have to rev the engine, let it fall then rev it less, let it fall, then rev it really high so that it will change gears and i dont get rear ended.

Put some Lucas in it because at this point anything is worth a shot.http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=29&catid=2&loc=show
Easy to find at most parts stores.
