its when the crank bearings have lube probs and wear out causing your crank to move excessivly back and forth hitting the crank angle sensor.youll hear a ticking that goes up and down with rpm's and doesnt go away like lifter tick.its a new 4400 dollar block and sometimes a new engine at that.if you drive your car in fear of it,sell it and call it a day.other than that out of 40 million eclipses only a rare number has cw.its a default of mitsu's that they wont fess up to.one way to avoid this is when using a heavier than stock clutch, disengage the sensor that makes you have to push the clutch to the floor when starting.at start up is when theres no oil in the head so you dont have to push the crank over with no lube in the bearings......understand?there is no "real" fix for this.the second gens are more succeptible to it than 1st gens due to have a 7 bolt head over the 6 bolt of the 1st gen.

:( hey guys...

so beside the crank walk problem in the 2g's is there any other engine or suspension problems to worry about or recalls?

we have a ball joint recall.look into it.also i did find a cure for crank walk.......stroke your engine with a stroker kit.the crank is in spec unlike the 2G crank.its 31-3800 bux though and fo rthat you can rebuild your engine but yet you could get walked again......only cure i know of besides running it off a cliff.

:) Thanks boys I'll just have to investigate on get the ball joint replaced. Is the stroker kit a do it yur self job or would a serious DSM mechanic? what do they cost?

id have a stroker kit done by a proffessional,i mean its a whole engine rebuild, they are about 3100-3800 bux.new pistons, crank, bearings comes with it.

With crankwalk its not so simple as the block is merely defective and the solution is definitely not so simple as a $3XXX stroker kit.

Given the number of people that have suffered from crank walk there have been many approaches to solving the problem. Some people can replace bearings and be fine, others have to replace crankshafts, and still others are forced to replace the entire block. I myself have a 7-bolt engine crankwalk on me. The most garunteed way to prevent crankwalk is to swap in a 6-bolt 1g engine. It can be done for about $2000 and is a much better upgrade as the 1g engines flow more than the 2g counterparts.

As to the cause of crankwalk, magnus motor sports (magnusmotorsports.com) has done a lot of research into the problem. They have isolated the 2g oil squirters as the primary cause. I won't go into their reasoning here, check the website.

Peace
