other trans problems`

i have a 93 fleetwood which should have the same trans as the caprice. i see there are some knowledgeable people here so i thought i would ask

i have an intermittent problem of the trans fluid being forced out of the overflow on top of the trans, and the fluid runs down the outside of the housing onto the exhaust. have checked the lines and they arent clogged. and have new filter and always new fluid because it pushes the fluid out. when i have fluid in it, it shifts perfectly, no slippage or anything

The most common cause for that is having air churned into the oil right at the pump. Even a failing check ball for the converter fill on the end of the input shaft usually doesn't cause that.

Air is usually introduced into the pump by one of two sources - The front pump bushing, or the filter pickup tube. If the symptom occurred suddenly after changing the filter, I'd suspect either the seal at the end of the pickup tube/pump inlet or a cracked/split plastic filter or tube. If this was occurring before the last filter change, I'd suspect the pump front bushing may be getting worn and allowing the seal to pass air (especially when cold). The other possibilities are either a worn pump housing and/or rotor, or possibly a poorly aligned pump body after assembly. If the transmission hasn't been disassembled recently, you can probably ignore the pump alignment question.

The easiest thing to check (obviously) is the filter and pickup tube seal. Hopefully, you installed a drain plug the last time you had the oil pan off. If not, this would be a good time.
