I think you would have to thin down black paint until it is very thin, then brush it on?

Yes, but what kind of colour?
Enamel, acrylic or others?

Acrylic would most likely work the best, considering it is easiest to thin.

Try Tamiya Acrylic Flat Black thinned about 10 parts thinner to 1 part paint. For the the thinner try a 50/50 mix of water and alcohol. Brush it on and if it goes on a large flat area you don't want it on you can wipe it off with a Q-tip or tissue without any harm.

I just use testors flat black and brush it on pretty heavy and give it a couple of minutes to dry a touch........then wipe it off with an old sock (clean though) and the paint stays in the areas that you could get to with the sock!

There is a product called "the detailer" made just for this kind of thing.
Sorry, don't know who makes it. Check the ads in your modeling magazines. :D
