heater/ac question

Today was kind of a warm day around 57 so i decided to run my ac for a few min to cool the car down. I heard a few small bangs come from inside the dash(middle) and then it stopped(The air was comming out cold)then I shut off the ac. When I got out of work after about 13hrs of the car sitting it was cold so I decided to run the heater. When I ran the heater I could hear that banging again (did it the whole way home) even if I shut off the heater......The air comming out of the vents is warm but the sound is annoying. Any sugestions?

Check the blower make sure nothing got sucked in. Also is there a constant flow of air coming through like is it not blowing real hard then real soft? if there isn't a constant flow, then your blend door actuator which controls how much air comes through might be opening and closing while you have the air condition on and the heat, which may be why you are hearing a banging noise.

i've honestly never done a repair on a blend door actuator before nor have i had to have it done to any car i've owned, but i know on the town cars they are on the passenger side if you take out the glove compartment you will be able to see it clearly.

It's about 3.5 / 4 hours taking the dash apart, 100% labor.

The BDA is situated so that you can see it behind the glovebox but you can't touch it. To get to the mount screws the dash needs to come off, well.. mostly off.. you can pull it back on that side once it's all loosened up.

Even so, the farthest screw can't be reached very well.. some folks break off that 'boss' and mount it with just three screws.

Yes, it was all labor the part was something like $30 or $35 and the rest was for them to put it in. They told me that they had to remove the whole dash board to get at the BDA. I took the car down to the shop at 8am and I did not get it back until 5:30pm.

Let me ask you this: Do you have a passenger side air bag? If so, then that is probably one of the reasons the labor probably cost so much. Taking apart the dashboard is tedious but simple. It's taking out the air bag that can be difficult.

The On-Board Diagnostic can be initiated at any time with any resulting DTCs displayed. Normal operation of the system stops when the On-Board Diagnostic is activated.

To enter the On-Board Diagnostic, press the OFF and FLOOR buttons simultaneously and then press the AUTOMATIC button within two seconds. The display will show a pulse tracer going around the center of the display window. The test may run as long as 30 seconds.

To exit On-Board Diagnostic and retain DTCs, push the blue (cooler) button. The control will exit On-Board Diagnostic, retain all DTCs and then turn OFF (display blank).

To exit On-Board Diagnostic and clear all DTCs, press Defrost button. The vacuum fluorescent display window will show 000 and all function symbols for one second. Then, the EATC Control will turn OFF (display blank) and all DTCs will be cleared.

The On-Board Diagnostic should be deactivated before powering the system down (system turned OFF). Intermittent DTCs will be deleted after 80 ignition switch ON cycles after the intermittent condition occurs.

Yes there is a passenger side airbag. When I put it in test mode my code was "024" for a faulty blend door actuator. Are you getting a clicking sound from your dash?

Do you want to do the job yourself, and save the $600 labor? We have instructions lying around here somewhere :)

I would appreciate that, thanks! I know you have to tear apart the dash panel and the limo does have the passenger side airbag. It sounds like something I can do, just a lot of work. Thanks in advance.

There's one (or two) part(s) where a buddy might come in handy. One being; if you don't completely remove the dash panel, your buddy could help hold it out of the way while you're working the Actuator.

It's been said, and actually it's in the manual; that with the later Town Cars... 1998 + the Actuator can be replaced without loosening the dash panel, but gouging away at some of the dash padding is required.

I'm sure there's more somewhere but here's the write-ups I'm familiar with: (courtesy of LincolnsOnline)
