R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R roadcar - my first drawing

Hi all,

I have stared in complete wonder at the quality of drawing on these boards. SieG, Alex, rexsins-art and others have blown me away with their skill and ability with the pencil.

I have wanted to try myself, and so had a crack at my drawing my favourite car - an R32 Skyline GT-R roadcar. The car is a standard R32 with the discreet 'Nismo' bodykit used to homolgate the 500 examples required for international Group A racing, but the wheels (where I struggle the most) are non-standard items.

And I am not that happy with my drawing. It looks 'okay' I guess, but I just have no idea of how to build a beautiful 3 dimensional body shape. Mine is a few pencil lines with some occasional shading in a vain attempt to add depth. Sadly it just doesn't come off. Admittedly, the whole thing was done with a simple HB pencil. I had an image in my mind of how I wanted it to look (okay, Alex's drawings for me are the benchmark), but this didn't even come close to what I was hoping.

I have bought some coloured pencils (just low-end basic colours to get a start), but after seeing how my simple pencil drawing came out, I think my coloured pencils can stay in their packet for the time being!!!! :o)

Any constructive comments/suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

for a first drawing this looks fantastic! take alittle more time with the wheels and the rest of the body and it will look even better, the front clip looks great, keep it up

If my first drawing looked as good as that i would've been very pleased.
Don't be so hard on yourself!

You obviously have a great talent, as the proportions are perfect. Just be thankful that they are. Most pepole have to keep working on getting their priportions right for a long time (including myself).

As far as the shading goes, find yourself a reference pic similar to what you have drawn and copy the shading in the pic. Also, don't be afraid to push that pencil a bit harder and put more lead on the page. Your shadows should be black. You could also put a shadow under the car to make it look a little more realistic.

That is actually pretty good. The bumper seems a bit off, maybe it's slightly longated? But it looks good. Shading is clean. Keep it up. I'm planning to draw the front view of this car as well, since I've done the rear already.

That looks pretty good! Nice proportions. i would add some more shading to it. More contrast means more realism, and on cars, you want to have sharp reflections in the paint. Places like the tires and undershadow should be very dark.

Many many thanks to those that have taken a look and shared their thoughts.

I will take another look at darker shading and adding more depth to the picture by using sharper lines to accentuate the bodywork. I guess the old HB pencil may have to be updgraded to something a little 'stronger'....

Remember, higher the H the lighter and harder the lead. Higher the B, darker, softer the lead.

If you want dark shades, use either 2B or F. HB is about right for a mid-tone gray. I mostly use 6H, 4H, 2H, H, HB, and 2B on my drawings. I never go past 2B unless I want an area really dark, I use 4B. 6B is too dark.

Thanks for the advice regarding the differernt leads. It's something I've never really understood, but I do feel that HB is good for getting lines down. After that I am all at sea.....

I use 4H to sketch the lines real lightly, and then trace it over with 2H. I never use HB to draw in the lines, unless that area will have a darker shade. Lighter the lines, easier it is to erase or not shown as much.

aj mate keep at it you have real talent mate ,for a first up effort as said already that is friggin awsome keep going the only way is up :) gotta love the 32,s,as also said dont be afraid to go darker

Gee, thanks everyone for your comments... I am really humbled.

I want to work alot more on my drawing, and learn. Getting constructive feedback is the important thing, so I am really grateful to all of you for offering that.

I am making an interstate move shortly, so I won't be picking up the pencils for a couple of months until I am settled again.

I hope I can get some new drawings started and post them up here, and get comments. As long as I can make incremental improvements, I'll be happy.
