Turning off System Restore messed me up

I turned off system restore and rebooted and my user account and settings are wiped out, everything is as if I restored the computer, except for the fact that my programs remain and that my files and folders have been hidden (I just find them with search). This happened on my laptop, is there a chance it will happen again on my desktop? Right now I'm backing up my system on my external drive.

It said my ASR diskette wasn't created because I did this on my external...do i need that ASR diskette or will the backup be okay?

From what you posted, the most likely cause is your Windows profile has become corrupt. Try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Are you backing up your laptop or desktop? There's not much point backing up a corrupt system after the fact.

Did this happen immediately after you turn off system restore? Why did you turn it off - virus or spyware infestation?

Turning off System Restore has no direct effect(s) on your User Profile. System Restore goes into full effect as you install/reinstall programs, especially ones having to do with Windows (Media Player 11/10, IE7/6, DirectX, etc.) It also works idly in the background making "notes" as you could call them of things you change, so in the event you ever try to use it, it can crap all over itself trying to read it's own "notes" :). What else did you disable while you were at that? Sounds like Security Accounts Manager or something like that got disabled, check your Event Log and see if anything pops up there giving your profile errors, you can likely restore the profile by fixing the error it gives.

I turned it off to make my computer faster or less slow. The only other thing I turned off is print spooling. If I had touched the accounts manager I'd believe it. Anyway, about to turn it off on my desktop, since now I have a backup.

nothing.
just a random film/movie quote.

I posted that after maybe 26 hours of being awake; just when your body starts to not be able to sit still.

You start to feel really messed up when you've been awake >40 hours.

i did 3 days working straight (except eating/travelling to college/bathroom etc..) to finish coursework.

12 redbulls, 24 proplus and a rapidly approaching deadling screws you up..

that's nothing, in my last college i spent at least 2 nights a week without sleep. that was for a year. (2 year course, 1 year. couldn't afford to screw up again.)
