I don't have ABS on my ranger, but I needed to turn it off on my 95 Grand Caravan. In that vehicle, the ABS computer and ABS modulator were separate devices. They were hooked together with a cable. So I just unplugged the cable and put a plastic bag around the pulled out plug to protect it from dirt/grease.

If the ranger has two separate components then your in luck. The only draw back of pulling the cable is that the ABS light will turn on.

Stan

This really isn't shedding any light on my problem. I don't really know how the dumb thing works.

Why would you want to disconnect the ABS, if I may ask. They serve a purpose especially in areas where it often rains or snows. I also have a '99 Ranger 4.0L and the ABS sensor is located right above where your universal joint enters the differential housing. It senses the axle speed and the module compares it to the speedometer to produce the pumping brake action during skid situation. If you disconnect the ABS, you will have problem with your speedometer reading at lower speeds.

In my case, my ABS modulator began to leak. I bought one a local junk yard and put it in. However, it needs a special electronic tool (DRB-II) to bleed the modulators compartments. So I just unplugged the capble going to the computer. My concern was that when I hit a slick spot, the computer would pump air into the brake lines.
