towing question

I have read a lot of the older topics but i want to just confirm some things
I just bought a blazer, (1997 LT 4x4 w/ 132,000mi) and this summer probably going to be doing some towing with it instead of using my parents 2003 astro awd. In the astro it has the towing package with tow/haul mode.. meaning it probably turns off od i would have to assume. i was just wondering i usually tow at 55-65 with my light trailer (only about 1500-1600 loaded) and i was wondering should i always tow in 3 or just leave it in od? I have read a few topics on here and i have seen some posts where people are worried about the high rpms. I really dont want to blow the tranny (the guy i bought it from already had it rebuilt thank goodness) or ruin the motor.

Towing with your Blazer should not be a problem. There are some things that you should keep in mind though. Towing increases both engine and transmission temperatures. Heat is a major factor in engine and transmission failure. Check the engine cooling system including the radiator cap, fan clutch, and thermostat for proper operation. Installing a transmission cooler will help reduce transmission temperature. Most auto parts stores carry transmission coolers and they are relatively easy to install. Change the transmission fluid and filter more often during the towing season. Changing it at the beginning and end of the season is cheap insurance. Constant shifting of the transmission in and out of overdrive increases both wear and temperature. Manually shifting to 3 will not allow the transmission to shift into OD. That will reduce transmission wear and temperature. If you are on hilly terrain, shift the transmission to 3. If you are cruising on flat terrain, try shifting to OD but "feel" for the transmission shifting in and out of OD, if it does, shift back to 3. These tips should help you and your Blazer get through a trouble-free towing season.
