Hard Drive

Hey i'm inturested in setting up a hard drive system in my car for mp3's... what all goes into this and whats a ball park number as far as cash goes.

I think the simplest way (maybe not the cheapest way) to do this is to buy a Head Unit that is compatible with an auxilary data storage, such as some Kenwood decks. You can buy compatible hard drives distributed by kenwood for that specific deck. I'm sure there are other more conventional ways of doing this. EDIT: I believe the Kenwood product is called the Kenwood Music Keg, if you're interested.

actully if you already have a mp3 player all you need is either a head unit that has an auxiery plug or just get a fm tranmitter

if you have a loud system, and i don't mean 130- 140 but in excess of 145 db the hard drive will get rattled to death and will become useless

Agreed. Kenwood music keg simplest way. sony made a couple decks with hds in em, most others are pretty small in capacity (clarion has some decks with 128 mb or something).

hardrives can take a beating, if installed properly than there wont be an issue.

i have many ipods(they have HD's) screw up because of 156+ db so they may can take a beating at normal volumes, but a 50+ like i stated above they don't hold up so well, but external hd's may hold up

thats not a ture hardrive that is a modifed one to make it small to be able to fit if you took a desktop on it could more then likely be able to take it.

You dont have to always have a hard drive either. You can use a jump drive to a USB input (they sell them), you can use any form of digital media card to this USB input. And the kenwood music keg is a nice product, i know theres other types out on the market.

One thing i dont get is i hear of these people and of course sony made an anti-skip one for the car, i have had my system blasing full voume, hit pot-holes, speed bumps, and the only thing that has made my cd player skip and broke it was when i wrecked my car. But in every car every system i have had i have never had a HU skip under normal conditions.

Oh yeah dbfreak, the pressure would destroy the HD before the violent shaking. Ive done some pretty screwed up things to HD's and they still worked, even with a cracked disc. It helps having a computer geak/car audio geek for an uncle.

Hard drives can take a beating if there isn't any defects with them to begin with. Ive taken them apart and such and still seen them work. As long as you have it secured enough where it went vibrate to much it will be fine. I've gotten my cd player to skip under normal conditions before. having a 16 year old piece of crap car will do that though.

LOL i got you by one on the car, 89 s10 blazer, and a 90 honda accord. The Ive only had the cd player in truck skip 2 times, once was when i hit a curb trying to be a dumb ass. And the other was when i was playing a tone sweep, from 25-50hz, in about the 30-35 range the cd player stopped playing. I was checking some stuff i had just done with some secondskin and new weather trim to see what still rattled and leaked air. It just started skipping.

LOL, well i do that alot to. This time i was trying to make a turn and thought it would be funny to see the side of my truck pop up 6" when i went up on the curb, instead of going up on it. I kind of struck the edge of the wheel on it and took a nice 1" long chunk out if it.
