Hit a horse!

I loaned my daughter my prize GPGT while I changed the oil in her old Buick and danged if she didn't hit a horse a quarter of a mile from the house.
Busted windshield, broken headlight and pasenger mirror, wrinkled hood and fender, and a bunch of horsehair and flesh up by the mirror and windshield. But it's still driveable, didn't crunch the front end at all. Guess it was a lucky hit for her and the car. Poor old horse may have to be put down. I think today was 10 years ago that I bought it and this is the first body work I'll have to have done.

Be glad she didn't hit a pig.. Sorry to hear it, though.

What a bummer Wally. If you decide to put her down do it humanely.
I recall a while back one of our members hit a deer but it was repairable.

Damn Wally, is that car indestructible? A horse should've did her in. Sorry to hear that it got wadded up. With over 300k miles it might me hard to justify the repairs, but as Bob said, do it humanely if you decide to put her down, that car has served you well.

Yikes! Up here in Michigan I'm constantly watching out for deer especially at dusk and dawn... Sorry to hear that. Glad your daughter wasn't injured.

I forgot to ask how did the horse do? Is it still alive? I wonder how many pounds it weighs.

The horse survived and was still living this morning. It is hobbled pretty badly so I think it may not survive. It cut a gash about 1.5 inches wide and 18 inches long in it's hindquarters up high.
Insurance company is going to repair the car. It ain't going in the grave yet.
I will post some pics when I get them.

Not too bad, all things considered. Hitting anything is scary, that's for sure. Did the horse jump out in front of the car or something?

Curious, what eventually happened to the horse?

It was about 9:00 at night and the horse ran across the road. My daughter slammed on brakes and it was a low speed hit. I saw the horse yesterday and he was walking around but he has a nasty gash in his hind quarters.
Took the car to the body shop this afternoon and it should be ready next week. I'm surprised the insurance company decided to repair it but they didn't hesitate. It shouldn't cost me anything to get it fixed.

Poor horse but it sounds like it will be OK. :dunno:
I mean it wasn't a thoroughbred race horse was it? Speaking of which shouldn't the owner of the horse have any liability? Why should you use your insurance to cover the repairs.

My insurance will repair the car and get reimbursed from the homeowner's policy. Works for me.

My body shop says the insurance company wants to total the car because it has so many miles on it. Ain't going to happen. Looks like a fight may ensue. I'll put a red hood, green fender, blue mirror and a new windshield on it first.

What did the body shop come up with on their repair estimate? Sounds like a bunch of horse shit!.....
Funny your '97 GT in my area according to the NADA guides even with that mileage is worth:
Low Retail - $2875
Average Retail - $3925
High Retail - $4775
Of course that is for a non-wrecked.

I traded a 97 GP GT 2 weeks ago (Pennsylvania) that had 133K on it, we got $1,800 for it. It was in very good condition.
I've heard of people buying their totaled cars back from their own ins. co., ask them if that's an option. Then you can take the $$ and decide what to fix, etc.
The prob. with repairing it is one day you'll be flying along down the highway and it could throw a shoe...

Body shop estimated by mouth $4-5K
I'm going to stick to my guns and try to make them repair it. Not my fault the neighbor's horses were running loose and a fence that you could step over.

Yeah thats a bummer. Was that your insurance company or the neighbor's? If it were my neighbors I'd be going after them even if it means taking them to small claims court. I don't like most of them anyways so no love lost.
I'm not sure about other states like Georgia but in Texas if you are allowed to buy back your car you are stuck with registering it as a salvage vehicle and then you get an annotation of that on the title so that may not be good either. :dunno:

My neighbors insurance company doesn't want to spend over $4000 or they will total car. In GA, so I'm told by my body shop, that would mean a salvage title and couldn't drive the car for six months. They want to put used parts on the car to keep the price down.
I will talk to my insurance company Monday. This morning they said they could handle it for me. I told them I just wanted my car fixed. It didn't have one dent in it before and the interior was almost spotless.
I will be persistant.

Your other option Wally is to go with new CAPA certified parts that way the parts are new. I found CAPA body parts better than OEM and cheaper. But there is nothing wrong with used or pull parts either. Maybe you will all come up with a happy compromise. Tell them since it is a '97 it will be a collector's item one day. Good luck!

All new parts and looks like a brand new one. They painted the left front fender also and the bumper cover which was not damaged. Looks great and feels good to be back driving it, not that I don't like the Duramax.

The area i come from it wouldn't be unusual for someone to hit a horse. That sucks though, at least you got her fixed up.
That is a LOT of mileage, my GTP currently has 246 000km, but i'm dropping a low mile L67 in it late spring early summer. Have you ever done the intake gaskets?

I did the intake gaskets last june at about 306,000 miles. If the motor craps out, I may get another one to drop in it. I love this car.

Definitely, if anything goes on your motor, i would recommend an L67 swap. I know many guys who have done this and are extremely happy with the results. With a few small exceptions, these motors are bulletproof. Too bad i can't say the same for the trannies

out here it's "open range", the cows and horses have right of way. if you hit one your insurance has to pay for the vehicle and the animal. good thing is i have a freezer. horse meat is nice and lean like buffalo, under US laws you can't sell or trade it but you can eat it.
