EGR valve

I have a 94 MGM with 125,000 miles on it. The Check Engine Light has been on a while, so I took it to mech. The "EGR" code came up. The part is only $54.00. Should I clean carbon out of the neck and see if light goes out, or while it's apart, just replace valve? How hard is it to replace the EGR? Doesn't look too hard. Also, does the fuel rail need to come off to replace spark plugs? Thanks

I just got back from the mechanic, and he said he has never had to replace an EGR valve before. He has always just cleaned up the passageway of carbon deposits. Is that what you all have done as well?:uhoh:

I would replace the valve AND clean the passages!!

I will probably do both. I replaced the EGR valve and in my case was not too hard. I had to use a short stuby wrench to lose the exhaust pipe connected to the EGR valve. If you can also remove the air intake including the throttle body and elbow. I was getting a check engine light for egr emissions. When I removed the throttle body elbow the passages were all clog up with carbon deposits. After I cleaned all of that it was fine. Hope this helps out.

Did you get a EGR flow code? If the EGR valve opens and the diaphragm is not leaking there is no need to replace the EGR valve as there is nothing wrong with it. However the passageways under the intake neck do plug soild on the 92-94 models. Seen one plugged with only 70,000 miles on the clock. When the passageways plug seens the check engine light comes on with on EGR flow code. Even the PFE-DPFE sensor that triggers the check engine light rarely fails on the 92-94 models, unlike the newer problematic DPFE sensors. Your mechanic is on the right track.
