anyone know the model number for the starter for a 1989 toyota V-6, 4x4, extended cab, 3VZE engine, automatic, deluxe, pickup?

when i turn the key it just clicks, but the starter won't turn over.

its the original starter and solenoid so i'm guessing its likely shot and needs to be replaced.

is the 89 4x4 known for this particular problem? anyone have ? how did you finally fix it?

The starter would bind on mine due to worn bushings in the starter motor. I would have to tap it with a hammer to free it up. I did eventually replace the starter. If it is original, there should be a sticker or plate with the factory part number on it. Your truck is 18 years old, parts wear out, so I wouldn't call it a particular problem with your model truck. Have you checked the battery? Old, weak, not fully charged batteries will have the same symptoms. Are both ends of each battery cable clean and secure?

Try jumping a wire from the battery + to the small wire on the solenoid.

where is the small wire on the solenoid on that particular model? and what post on the battery do yuo hold the wire on?

is the starter and solenoid all one big piece on the 89 4x4?

also did clean the battery cables already --but still have the intermittent problem.

anyone have any idea what it will cost to get the rebuilt starter for my 89 4x4 toyota V-6 installed at a toyota shop [ie., how many hours does it take them to take the old one out and put the new one in]?

and what is the cost of the starter [part cost] too?

also i have the original cables from the battery to the starter. if i replace them too, any idea what that might cost?

Dealer rates can vary significantly. They should be able to give you an estimate over the phone.

there is a box like part just to the right of the master cylinder in my 4x4 V-6 xcab Toyota 1989 pickup [the part is on the driver's side; its nearer to the back firewall, not the air firtler box]

the box has a wire that runs from the box thru the firewall [the wire seems to run right in back of the dash board where the speedomoter is]. anyone know what this part is?

anyone ever have it replaced? if so, what did it cost?

i get a funny noise when i first start the 4x4, put it in drive, and start to move. the noise seems to be coming right from around that box like item.

after i drive the 4x4 for 15-20 minutes and its all warmed up, the noise seems to fade away [or at least it is much much much harder to hear].

could that boxlike item be the speedomoter box and cable???

help!!!!

anyone ever have the intermittent starting problem on their toyota 4x4 and instead of a bad starter or a bad battery or bad battery cable, it turned out to be a bad park-neutral switch?

i remember my shifter getting stcuk in PARK and it was hard as heck to get it to move into DRIVE. It would just jamm in PARK. I would literally have to manhandle it roughly to get it out of PARK into DRIVE. Is this what they mean by a bad park--neutral switch?

Try this first before you replace that starter, it is very common for the solenoid contacts to go bad on these starters and the replacement starters that you buy are usually not as good as the originals that came on out trucks.

http://4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml

there are other sites you should search for, my 3vze clicked when trying to start and it didnt happen all the time, it was intermittent. Sure enough, the five dollar starter solenoid contact needed to be replaced. Usually only the one on the battery side goes bad so you probably will only need one. If this doesnt turn out to be the problem... then what could five dollars and a half hours worth of work hurt?? If it is the problem then you saved a bunch of money because you didnt need to buy a new starter.

hope this helps,
Ja
