Ignition!

In reading posts on this forum I've seen some posters say that you should upgrade from the Magnavox ignition to the delco ignition module....from the look of things I am currently sporting the finest stock magnavox ignition module in my vintage 1992 lesabre.

After seeing those posts, I had my phantasies about performance buicks and found my way to the Jacobs Electronics site, where I found a "performance magnavox ignition coil", which offers gains in several signifigant categories, though none is more than 10%. (Which is still better than stock)

Or, if you wanna be more advanced, would it be more beneficial to ride the lightning with (upgrade to) the delco ignition module, or to put in this "performance" magnavox model?

(of course, "performance" delco modules are available, but the picture shows only one coil, so that would mean I'd have to buy 3 plus the cost of the initial system)

While I'm here, I'll throw out a question (have I done that yet? :) : How much is involved in swapping the 'vox for the delco ignition?

It's probably best to only have one project at a time, but when I open the hood to work on that coolant sensor I can't help but thing ahead to my next improvments...I'm sure you know how it is.

BTW, here's a picture of the 'vox coil in question:
(I don't know why the years are in reverse order, the page talks about 'turbocharged', or there's a picture of a non-buick on its rear wheels :)

Thanks again AF.

For my :2cents: on the issue:

The part of the Delco system that makes sense is the serperate coils from a cost standpoint.

I however had the Magnovox system on my 87 PA. The whole thing, contorl module and coil pack was baked when I bought the car, the previous owner blew the headgaskets and continued to drive it, overheating it escessively..

I regard the complaints of the " 'vow" system to be the same as the dreaded ignition module failures of the GM HEI distributer ignition setup, all a result of too much heat.

I kept my 87 in good tune and never over heated once in the near 7 years of service and never had any problems.

Regardless of what type of ignition you put on your LeSabre, it will not be doing “wheel stands” like the example in the picture!:rofl: If you want simlar ignition voltage shown on this Magnavox system, you could upgrade to the Delco type module with “MSD” coils and get the 40,000+v. BTW; the Magnavox “Super Coil” ignition (shown below) includes three integrated coils to fire all 6-cylinders, so you would not need more than one unit! Here (http://thejmfc.com/autos/delcoignition.html) is a good link on the conversion from Magnavox to Delco. MSD coils cost 45-50 bucks each. You will need three coils for the Delco system.

Here is a pic of the MSD coils mounted on the Delco ignition module:

I went ahead and got the magnavox "super coil" off of amazon since I managed to get free 2-day shipping on it :)

My ride definitely feels more powerful, and it isn't just me wanting it to be more powerful cause I spent money on it ;)

If this new coil only matches the stock delco system, then that means the "super delco" system will still be more powerful, but that's something for the future. Regardless, my ride is upgraded from the ghetto coil straight out of 1991 that I was running with.

The way the whole igniton system works with Wasted Spark still seems retarded to me, but my ride runs, and now runs better, so I'll save complaints on that for another day.
